Sophomore Rico McGraw, who started five games last season for Georgia in the secondary, has been dealing with a shoulder injury but that wasn’t the main reason he didn’t play in the season opener, according to coach Kirby Smart.
“It had been bothering him before then, but that didn’t have a whole lot to do with it,” Smart said Tuesday. “But it has been bothering him.”
The issue, Smart said, is a shoulder subluxation.
“His shoulder has been going in and out on him, which is very frustrating, especially for a person who has to use his shoulders and DBs have to use their arms,” Smart said. “When it’s slipping in and out, it’s very frustrating because you don’t know when it’s going to happen and when it does, it’s very painful.”
McGraw has been practicing at the nickel back spot. Alabama graduate transfer Maurice Smith started and played extensively in his first game as a Bulldog.
McGraw, a Nashville native, had 20 tackles and four pass breakups in nine games last season.
Meanwhile, Smart said offensive guard Isaiah Wynn is practicing through a minor left shoulder injury.
“He’s got a banged up shoulder,” Smart said. “He’s got a little hyperextension from the game the other night. He’s fine.”
Running back Sony Michel continues to practice in a non-contact jersey. Smart was asked if he's any closer to being cleared after missing the opener as he recovers from a broken foearm.
"It's all up to the doctors," Smart said. "All I can tell you is he's doing everything he can on the field outside of getting tackled. So I certainly hope so."
