Georgia’s defensive line could certainly use a boost after a trying offseason.
The three freshmen that arrived this summer so far have delivered that, according to coach Kirby Smart.
Michail Carter from Jackson, Tyler Clark from Americus and David Marshall from Upson-Lee are rolling in with the third and fourth units but impressing with their energy.
“They’re playing a lot harder than the other guys, which tells me they’re hungrier than the older guys,” Smart said. “They’re playing with good motors and playing hard. Probably the biggest pleasant surprise because of our depth issue there that I’ve seen so far. Now they’ve got to sustain it and they’ve got to do it with the big boy pads on.”
Marshall, listed at 6-3 and 270 pounds, was listed as an outside linebacker/defensive end by Georgia but Smart said coaches planned for him to be on the line.
Defensive line (due to suspension and dismissal) and running backs (due to injuries) are obvious areas where there are depth issues for Georgia, but Smart said “every position is a dead tie," in terms of concerns.
Walk-on tailback Prather Hudson from Brookstone in Columbus worked behind Nick Chubb and Brendan Douglas in one drill Tuesday and has done "a phenomenal job at summer workouts," Smart said.
Hudson almost accepted an offer from Davidson, according to WLTZ.com.
"He really competes hard and we think he'll be a good player for us," Smart said.
