Before Georgia’s first preseason scrimmage got underway Saturday afternoon in Sanford Stadium, the buzz was about the newest Bulldog who was out on the field in helmet and shorts but not in pads.
Alabama graduate transfer Maurice Smith, wearing jersey No. 2, went through drills with the defensive backs a day after the SEC granted a waiver for him to transfer and play for the Bulldogs.
Georgia was on practice No. 13 of the preseason, but Smith must go through an NCAA mandated acclimation period before he can practice fully with the team.
Smith arrived after being back home in Texas following his graduation a week ago from Alabama. He was working out with his father on Thursday while awaiting the SEC ruling.
On Saturday, he had a defensive call sheet on his forearm.
He went through a drill line with Rico McGraw, Aaron Davis Tyrique McGhee and Malkom Parrish.
Other observations from the media viewing period:
--Reggie Carter and Roquan Smith were the top inside linebackers on this day. Natrez Patrick was on the field but in the back of the line and later stood alongside Juwan Taylor while a drill went on.
The inside linebackers lost depth when Tim Kimbrough and Georgia parted ways earlier this week.
Johnny O’Neal and Ryne Rankin were the second-team inside linebackers, followed by Shaun McGee and freshman Jaleel Laguins.
McGee is listed as an outside linebacker and was spotted with the outside linebackers early this preseason, but at least one observer said he’s been with the inside linebackers for other practices.
--Tailback Nick Chubb (knee) was in a regular jersey in what will be his first scrimmage since his knee injury last October. Sony Michel (forearm) was going in a non-contact jersey and Isaiah McKenzie (shoulder bruise) was also in non-contact.
--Defensive lineman John Atkins (hyperextended knee) was in uniform but tossing a ball in the air. He is sitting this day out.
--Word is it is unlikely that any statistics will be provided after the scrimmage, at least not across the board stats. So don't expect to have quarterback numbers to dissect.
