Georgia’s defensive line was missing one of its top players in practice on Thursday.
Nose guard John Atkins was absent during the media viewing period.
Any details on an injury to Atkins may not come from Georgia until Saturday, the next time coach Kirby Smart is to meet with the media.
Georgia's defensive line already is depleted.
Defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter isn’t on the 105-player camp roster while he receives treatment following two alcohol-related arrests.
The position was thinned by the dismissal of Chauncey Rivers and the status of Julian Rochester for the opener is unclear as he faces felony charges for an incident with a BB gun at his dorm.
The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Atkins, a junior from Thomson, ran with the first unit during pursuit drills early in practice on Thursday.
He started three games last year, recording 12 tackles, including one for loss.
Sophomores Trenton Thompson and DaQuan Hawkins were the top two defensive linemen going through drills Thursday. They were followed by redshirt freshman Justin Young and sophomore Michael Barnett and the next duo was freshman Tyler Clark and Rochester. Freshman David Marshall and Michail Carter followed.
Some other observations:
--Running back Sony Michel continued to take handoffs with his left forearm in a cast before later joining strength coach Scott Sinclair on the side along with other players dealing with injuries. Running back Shaquery Wilson (bone bruise) and defensive back Shattle Fenteng also were with them.
--Freshman wide receiver Tyler Simmons is adjusting to the college games. He had two drops early in practice. He wasn’t alone. Reggie Davis also had a drop. Sophomore inside linebackers Roquan Smith and Reggie Carter also couldn’t snag interceptions backpedalling while positon coach Glenn Schumann threw the ball their way.
“Come on, two hands on the ball,” Schumann said.
Schumann, by the way, wore a long sleeve sweatshirt and sweatpants on a muggy afternoon with temepartures in the 80s.
--Quarterbacks Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey were working in the same group with Jacob Eason and Sam Vaughn next. Eason delivered a rocket on a comeback route to Isaiah McKenzie that was caught.
--Georgia was practicing on the far turf field of the club sports complex after rain fell before practice.
