The question when Shaquery Wilson signed with Georgia in 2015 was whether he would play wide receiver or in the secondary.
On Tuesday, the answer was running back. And that’s where the sophomore could stick for a while.
Coaches liked what they saw when the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Wilson played the position some in Saturday’s scrimmage.
“We didn’t think we could get through G-Day without enough backs and Shaquery did a pretty good job Saturday,” coach Kirby Smart said. “We went ahead and said, `Hey, we’ve got two practices. Let’s make it a full-time move.' He actually did some good things today. I caught one run that he split us on. He looks more natural when the ball’s in his hands. It’s a lot easier to get it to him there when you can just hand it to him.”
After walk-on Nick Moore suffered a minor knee injury in Saturday’s scrimmage, depth was further thinned.
Star tailback Nick Chubb (knee) and Brendan Douglas (wrist) are limited by injury and A.J. Turman is transferring.
Georgia at first listed Wilson, a Coral Gables, Fla. product, as an athlete but he ended up as one of four freshmen signees last year to play wide receiver. He saw action in two games with no catches.
Whether he works this summer as a running back will depend on how G-Day goes, Smart said.
“If we’re able to find another back out there somewhere," Smart said. "Kind of how our depth chart looks like, how Nick progresses. But it’s an option we want to have.”
Wilson’s “thickness and the bulk” to play running back were factors in the move, Smart said.
“Shaquery’s done it before and he was comfortable doing it,” Smart said. “He’s kind of fired up about it. He has a great attitude towards doing it.”
