Optimal stadium size

This being a slow time, i was wondering what those with a lot of experience visiting football stadiums around the country think the optimal stadium size should be. you obviously want enough people there to give the crowd some weight and to create an ambiance. And the more seats there, the more reverue there is coming in. But after a certain point, you probably get a better view of the game from the parking lot. With the push for stadiums seating over 100K, it seems like these things might be getting too large. What do you think?

I think that a stadiums optimal size depends entirely on its design. I'm being 100% serious and here are some examples of why.

First, we all know that UT, Michigan and a few others have over 100K seats. Here are the problems with that many seats. First, both of those stadiums seats are actually made for about 3/4 of a person meaning they are really small seats and crowded stadiums. Also, if you are sitting in the corner of the endzone, you might as well be sitting a mile away from the field. If someone were to build a 100K seat stadium that went more upright than out, it would be great, but most don't.

Second, there is even a lot of disparity in stadiums that hold between 85K and 95K. I think BD is a very good stadium, but I think UF has a great stadium because the crowd sits right on top of the field. There really isn't a bad seat in the house. Georgia holds 92K or a bit over and yet the fans are slightly removed from the field. Auburn has 87K or so and if you are in the upper deck, you might as well NOT go because you feel like you're sitting in Opelika.

The best stadiums to sit in today are the Georgia Dome and frankly I also loved the Titans stadium. They both hold in the low 80's if I remember correctly and the seats are close to the stadium and are individual seats in the Dome. Frankly the Georgia Dome might be the nicest stadium I've been in for football in many years!

The seats are close to the stadium? ;) Excellent design. . and convenient, too!

I know what you mean about Tennessee....better wear your deodorant because you sit in each others lap. I know money is behind all this but I hope our stadium doesn't go there.

I disagree about the Titans' stadium. I was there for the Music City Bowl. My seats were about 5-10 rows from the top of the upper deck. Those seats weren't all that good at all. I felt like I was over a mile in the air and I could barely tell who was who on the field. As for Bryant-Denny...my season tickets were about 10 rows from the top of the East Upper Deck. I actually thought they were great seats as far as seeing the field goes. It was a hike getting up there...but the view was pretty nice.

The Georgia Dome is great and I wouldn't mind sitting there every December.

I've been to the Ga Dome several times and it is the best stadium I have ever been in. I have also been to the Titans stadium and sat near the top. And like theBIGyowski, i didn't enjoy those seats. I felt like I was watching the game from another planet.

Sanford stadium is terrible from the upper deck, legion field had some terrible , terrible seats but neyland is the worst by far. I think 92-95 is about as large as you could get without sacrificing the on field views, but I'm not an architect, I just stayed at holiday inn express last night.

I think

about 300,000 would be nice. Could you imagine 300k full of bama fans? That would be so freaking sweet! Rammer Jammer would sound like you were inside the jet engine during take-off. However that may be a engineering impossibility, so I say about 90,169 would be about right for me.

i think ours will be just about perfect after the addition. we could maybe close in the other side, but i have always like stadiums with one open end for the scenery and large scoreboard. the completely closed stadiums remind me of the totally boring and crappy cookie cutter stadiums, used by pro baseball and pro football teams, that have been recently torn down.

Well I hope you don't consider ours "boring and crappy cookie cutter" because I believe we are doing the same thing to the South endzone that we are doing to the north. I believe they are gonna start that after 2007 season and have it ready by 2008, I believe. Then it just may be THE loudest stadium in the nation!

stadium capacity will continue to grow along with demand for the product--college football. MY guess is we, along w/ UT, AU, LSU , USC, and ARK will continue to expand our stadiums to accomodate increased interest in the game.

do you really think the university will invest another 120 million in just 2 more years, i hope you were kidding or have bad information. also, we all know it won't be that loud until the good seats get a little more enthusiasm into their life. BD stadium may actually look distinct though(with a closed look), since the decks will actually not connect with each other completely.

how exactly would tenn's stadium expand? add a second upperdeck that will enable daring fans to enter the "mile-high" club.

Having been to a few stadiums myself, including: Neyland, Ben Hill, Michigan and Oklahoma Memorial, I find the 100,000 range to be a great atmosphere. As much as I hate UT, and I do truly hate them, the large and somewhat intimidating stadium is somewhat of a nice place to visit, besides the creme-sickle orange. Michigan had a dead crowd for the most part, not as loud as I would have expected. Ben Hill-Griffin was against Vandy, so it was not as loud as it could have been. OU was the only other large stadium I've been to.

I would really like to see Alabama eventually expand to over 100,000, with the other endzone being added on to. I believe it would be difficult with Paul Bryant Dr. on that side and the cemetery beyond that. But with both ends closed in it could trap alot of noise and make Bryant-Denny an itimidating place to play. Sure it doesn't rise right over the opponent like at UT and FU, but the noise could be undearable for the opposing offense if this came to fruition. We may well see this one day, since in the last 12 years we've seen the stadium expanded three times (around '94(i believe), again in '98, and currently).

The optimal size for a stadium is as large as you can possibly make it. There were rumors as early as 2000 that Bama would add upper decks in both the north and south endzones and I can't wait for that. Bryant-Denny with a seating capacity over 100,000 will be just amazing. I wish we could have a stadium with 200,000.

I think the BDS will only have one more addition. Thats the south endzone. Other than that you've got to start over. There's no real place to add more seats. Maybe lower the playing field and add more seats towards the field but i really dont see that happening. I think after they close the north endzone I think the only think left to do to BDS is cosmetic stuff. Maybe dome it?- Still doubt it. I was wondering if anyone knew what they were going to do to the area where the team runs out at games. I know its moving to the north endzone. Just wondering if anyone had heard. I know there is going to be a statue of Coach Bryant next to the enterance to the locker room on the inside but I was wondering what would be around the actually opening into the stadium. And can we add something cool like smoke or something else to our entrance, maybe fire, that would be pretty bad *****.

are there any architects in the house????
could bd be expanding in the end zone near bryant drive? my friends swear it's not possible since it is so close to the road. i think it could just hang over the street like the oldest side upper deck. any opinions or thoughts concerning this?

I think it can be done. I dont think a big building like the north endzone could be added but i definately can see how an upperdeck could go there. I think that it would have to go over the street maybe even having support columns on the cemetary side. But who knows. I know that they accomplishing new thing in archetecture everyday and I dont think this would be a huge problem for some.
