Has anyone tried one of these things. I know that you prefer your BGE's but this one looks interesting. Had some dry rubbed apple-wood smoked ribs from one last night and they were GLORIOUS. I'm really thinking about buying one (only about $150).

Doc I don't know any more than what I have read about them. I can see the health benefits of dry cooking so it might be something to look at.

Speaking of dry cooking. I was at Costco this weekend and they have a oil-less turkey fryer. Has anyone heard of this? I realize that deep fried turkeys aren't necessarily bad for you since the skin seals out the oil, but this would save a lot of money in not having to buy the oil.

Sorry i need to read up on how to insert links so they aren't long but here is the link:

I spotted that contraption when I was shopping for a new turkey fryer. There is something about frying and oil that just go together so I passed. actually this Orion cooker reminded me of that.

Well, I went out and bought one of these things and cooked a Boston Butt last evening. I rubbed it with the McCormick's pork rub that was recommended in another post, and a almost 4 pound butt (bone in) cooked/smoked for 3 hours in the Orion. I put in hickory chips and let it go like it says in the manual that comes with the cooker. When I got it off the heat, I let it rest for a while and noted the nice bark on the exterior as well as a stong smoky smell. I grabbed the bone and lifted up....and the bone fell out! Tender and juicy! I pulled the meat apart with a couple of forks and we had the first bit with some Georgia South BBQ sauce. Fantastic! I will say that I was skeptical at first about this cooker and its ability to give an adequate smokey flavor, but I am skeptical no more. I can't wait to cook a chicken or turkey in this baby!!! Scoff at the Orion if you want, but I'll be eating and enjoying while you do.

Did a 7lb turkey breast this weekend with mesquite chips. One and a half hours and the little "done indicator" had popped out. Skin was golden brown and it was pouring juices into the plate I placed it on. Fantastic flavor (for those of us who like mesquite). The only down side was that it did not crisp the skin of the turkey. It was dry but not crisp, so for those of you who like to eat turkey skin, this isn't the gadget for you. :)

FYI, I did't brine it or rub it....just a little salt and pepper and on the Orion. The next time, I'll have to do at least two breasts at once (could probably accomidate 4-6 if needed) because I keep losing samples to relatives who are passing through the house.

I'm in love with my new gadget.

I guess try rubbing some oil on the outside or get some herbed butter under the skin which might crisp it up. Sounds like a neat gadget have you tried brisket yet?

Not yet. My job pretty much limits me to cooking on the weekend. Brisket is on the list of things I want to do. This thread is pretty much my diary of cooking on my Orion.
