I think they actually got it correct.

The defender's left hand knocked the ball loose right before or just as Arnold crossed the goal line and then the right hand knocked it away.

But he lost control with that first hand's contact...

I believe you are right that the first punch jarred the ball loose. Whether it had yet crossed the plain isn’t so clear. Call on the field carries the day.
