Blog: Our first look at recruiting

It might be a bad time to talk about recruiting, with the season not over and so many other teams in a state of coaching flux (and, by definition, recruiting flux as well) -- but in Alabama, there's never really a "bad" time to talk recruiting.

First out of the gate is this discussion, which I'm going to limit to the players Alabama already has committed. As the next few weeks go by, we'll continue to look at other uncommitted athletes, but to start with I want to give a basic rundown of how I see this all shaking out.

Thanks, Jess. Seems like a great class already. This puts some personality to the list. I can't wait to see the other wide out commitments. I'd love to see how good of a deep threat CJM can make with some legitimate help opposite Julio to take some heat off him. Can you Imagine??

Great post. I enjoyed it all, except one part:

West is a pure cover corner, and reminds a lot of people of former Alabama great Ramzee Robinson in build and speed.

Nothing against Ramzee in particular, but he was anything but great. He looked pretty stout in 2005 when he had great safety play helping him over the top, but once Roman Harper and Charlie Peprah moved on to the next level in 2006, Ramzee suddenly showed himself as the average-at-best SEC cornerback that he was.

Guys like Joe Namath, Dwight Stephenson, Shaun Alexander, Demeco Ryans, etc., are greats, not Ramzee. Again, I liked him as a young man and thought he represented our university well, but there was nothing great about his on-field play.

There is never a bad time to talk recruiting on the recruiting board. We do it 365 days a year and this is definitely not 'our' first look.
