Petrino to Arkansas

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

R U serious? These are the EXACT same words spoken by our rival fans when Saban came to Tuscaloosa. "Recruits won't trust him to keep his word" was the catch phrase on every rival sight and out of some of the goobs at espn as well. They only didn't trust him enough to give him a top ten class in 4 weeks of recruiting last year, and what looks like a top three class this year. Sorry, but the trust mantra doesn't ring true to me. I think Petrino's hiring surprised everyone; (at least all the ones who were laughing and predicting a total meltdown because no GOOD coach would ever want the Arky job for this or that reason. [Hmmm, that sounds familiar too, doesn't it?]), including the Arkansas fans. I also think Arkansas just turned the corner to legitimacy as a yearly contender in the very near future.

Saban Rules!!

There is a difference between Saban and Petrino.

Saban lasted two FULL seasons in Miami. Also the University Of Alabama and CNS showed enough class and respect to at least wait till the season was over to consider another job.

Petrino has signed twenty years of contracts in less than a year with three different teams. When the going gets tough Pistol pete packs his bags in the middle of the night and leaves the falcons high and dry.

There are several differences. The most important with regards to people that frequent this website is that Saban is the University of Alabama football coach and Petrino is not.

maybe the had the press conference last night so as not to give the ATL media a chance to invade...remember the miami media at the Saban press conference? maybe they wanted to avoid that if possible!

I was thinking the same thing last night. If that PC was today things could have gotten ugly. It was a smart move by Arkie and BP to do it when they did to keep the Atl media out.

Saban and Petrino are apples and oranges. Saban went from Michigan St. to LSU and then to Miami. In doing so, he did not continuously look for other jobs and opportunities. Pat Forde has a good point, every year for the past 5 years Petrino has been actively looking for a new position while telling his current school that he is staying. He left Louisville after signing a ten year deal. Moreover, Saban dealt with the media storm (maybe not well) and stayed at Miami till the bitter end. Petrino left literally in the middle of the night. The difference between Saban and Petrino is Petrino deserves it.

Well said - and the TRUTH! there is a HUGE difference in the two.

and honestly, i would rather Saban handle the way he did, then the way Petrino did. if Saban had left like Petrino, I still would of been very happy we had him...and might not say it out loud, but I would of thought it was a pretty low thing to do.

The SEC WEST is loaded with some coaches. Petrino really should have stayed at Louisville. Now he has to compete with in-state powers such as Ark. St. and Ark. Pine Bluff for the best talent.;)

I see the two very differently. Saban gave it two years, and considering the current plight of the Dolphins, got his players motivated. I am not a CNS historian but I doubt that you would find any .75 year coaching stints on his resume. As Pat Forde pointed out and as we know from Auburn's flirtation, Petrino has always enthusiastically listened to each and every job offer that comes his way regardless of its effect on his current employer, his players, coaches or former friends/colleagues (CTT).

I definitely can see your point, and I'm not saying mine is right, it is just an opinion. It may affect recruiting but who knows for sure. The "Liar" and "Itchy feet" tags pinned on CNS didn't have an effect on his recruiting at the Capstone. Also, similar to Saban, he may realize that his stock is ready to plummet if he jumps ship again too soon. I still think he's a good coach and apparently good at coach speak, if the Ark AD didn't have a problem with his itchy feet.

I'm a Falcons fan and disappointed in the way he left them mid season. On the other hand, he didn't have much of a rapport with the players in Atlanta, and enough of the stars grumbling to the owner about the coach could definitely get the coach fired after the season ends. They have a lot more cash tied up in the players than in the coach. CBP may have expected to be dismissed at the end of the year by Atlanta with no job openings left to take come January.

And if anyone doesn't believe that Nutt will make Lil' Sis a player again, you're wrong. If Croom keeps things moving in the right direction the SEC West could be the toughest 6 teams in America who are forced to play each other every week. Presently I think the SEC East has been holding that torch but not in a truly dominant fashion, but more by reputation. The West could be FOR REAL, which should scare all of us!

Playing in a strong division has its pluses and minuses. The likelihood of running the table in conference is greatly diminished now, and with 6 strong teams chewing each other up each week, there is no rest for the weary. An undefeated West Div. team is going to be a tough bunch.

Even with Petrino at the helm, I think R-Kansas is in for a couple down years. McFadden, Jones, and Hillis ARE their offense, and once they're gone, it could get ugly. No WR's worth mentioning and no RB's anywhere near their skill level. Mediocre QB. I can already hear the "Fire Petrino" chants coming from Fayetteville when he has 2 losing seasons in a row. We will see though...

Classy.

bmcklv, i think that we can both agree that Bobby Petrino will not be synonymous with the word "character". Hope the Falcons find a good replacement and get rid of some of their characters.

Whenever Dickie V is on I turn down the sound. Guy is a jerk and had no business bashing Bama/Saban.

DV is a coach who was a loser. He is like the guy on ESPN's game day. Lousy college coach who always lost. DV lost in the NBA and either quit or got fired. His speciality is his big mouth. I have never listened to him. He is a screamer and that Ole Baby crap drove me nutts (okay nutter than I already was). I got sick of that fool quickly. Whenever he comes on anything, I leave. I am now turning down the sound most times when I even visit ESPN. I watch the trailer on the bottom to see the scores, etc. But, that is about it. I only watch when things like this happen to see what is going on. They have roasted this guy all day for leaving. Fools like Sean Salisburysteak, a real loser and bum in the NFL who could not lead a peewee team, was running his fat mouth. I hate that guy about as much as DV. ESPN has simply gone cable news with its liberal bias crap.
