Crimson Tide pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in the series opener

TUSCALOOSA, AL – Alabama and Texas A&M matched up for a pitchers' duel on Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium with the Aggies coming out on top, 3-2. The Crimson Tide is now 15-12 on the season and 2-5 in Southeastern Conference play.
Alabama's pitchers surrendered three runs and combined for 14 strikeouts with Texas A&M's arms countering for 11 punchouts and two runs allowed by night's end. Nathan Dettmer (2-2) picked up the win for the Aggies, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts while Brad Rudis picked up his second save of the season. Garrett McMillan (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with an Alabama season-high nine strikeouts.
The Crimson Tide was first on the board in Friday's game, gaining a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI-double from Andrew Pinckney. The Aggies matched UA with a run in the top of the fourth before a Texas A&M two-run home run in the sixth broke the tie. Alabama battled for one run in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with a chance to tie, but a groundout ended the rally. The Crimson Tide was able to load the bases once again, this time in the eighth, but a strikeout kept the game-tying run at third.

"This was a really good college baseball game, and I thought the starting pitchers were outstanding. Garrett McMillan gave us a great start and Hunter Hoopes and Brock Guffey did some good things out of the bullpen. (Texas A&M) hit the home run in the sixth inning, and we had our chances in the seventh and eighth, but we just couldn't get a big hit when it mattered, and that's the difference in the game. Credit to their bullpen, they made some pitches when it counted, and we just didn't do enough offensively."

How It Happened
- B2 | Owen Diodati led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second on an infield groundout. Andrew Pinckney followed with an RBI-double to the wall in left to get the Tide on the board first. (1-0, Alabama)
- T4 | A two-out double to left-center tied the contest at one apiece. (1-1)
- T6 | Brett Minnich snuck a ball inside the foul pole and over the wall in right for a two-run home run. (3-1, Texas A&M)
- B7 | Jim Jarvis worked a two-out bases-loaded walk to cut the Aggie advantage to one. (3-2, Texas A&M)
- Alabama pitchers struck out 14 in tonight's contest and have punched out 10-or-more hitters in 13 games this season.
- Garrett McMillan recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in tonight's game. McMillan's previous high for strikeouts was seven, which he accomplished three separate times this season, most recently against Florida on March 18.
- McMillan's nine strikeouts are also the most by any Tide pitcher this season. Alabama's arms had punched out seven batters seven different times heading into tonight. The most recent instance came at Mississippi State on March 26 when Jacob McNairy struck out seven in his start.
- Eight of the nine starters on offense reached base safely on Friday night.
- Jim Jarvis has reached base safely in 17 straight SEC games dating back to May 2 of last season against Missouri.
- Jarvis' hit streak in conference play came to an end at six games. Over the streak, the junior batted .250 (6-24) with a triple, four RBI, two runs scored and five walks.
- Dominic Tamez has recorded a hit in six straight SEC games. The junior is batting .321 (9-28) with a double, four RBI, and a run scored during that stretch.
- Owen Diodati has now reached base safely in 12 straight contests overall, dating back to March 12 against Binghamton
- Junior outfielder William Hamiter saw his first action since Feb. 26 against Texas. Hamiter had missed the last 19 games due to a foot injury.
