ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, may choose to shut down the app in the US instead of selling it if legal challenges against legislation banning the platform fail.

This is because the algorithms central to TikTok’s operations are crucial to ByteDance, making a sale is unlikely. Despite TikTok’s smaller share of ByteDance’s revenues and users, the company prefers shutting it down to relinquishing control of its valuable core algorithm.
