Trouble follows Rick Stansbury like stink follows rot.

Still, I wonder what NCAA rules are left to violate? And who's going to enforce whatever rules are left and have any punishment hold up in court?

Still, you have to think something's up when they've cleaned out the whole coaching staff (plus some non-coaching staff members) this close to the start of the season. And how did Hardaway survive the house-cleaning when all 10 of the personnel who were a couple of days ago or left over the summer reported to him, directly or indirectly? Or maybe he's a dead man walking just so they can field a team, and he'll be gone the second the clock runs out on the last game.

I don't generally like anonymous sources. Still, in this case, whoever ratted them out appears to have been onto a big story. I'd guess the rat is one of the 5 who left over the summer.

Late Add: Mrs. Basket Case and I were discussing what NCAA rules were both still around and enforceable. She came up with rules against gambling. Which is plausible. Less plausible would be raising funds for pay-for-play via illegal activities.

From what I’m reading it could be around direct payments to players and HS coaches by the staff to secure the commitment of players to Memphis. Some of these possibly tied to Hardaway himself. Also think at least some of these incidents happened prior to the implementation of NIL approval by the NCAA.

Also it mentions academic fraud issues with counselors and academic support doing course work for the students. Shocking I know, right? What next? Major academic institutions setting up a shadow curriculum or no show majors? I just can’t believe it….

Speaking of, my son told me he saw something this weekend that that particular someone was stepping away from basketball.

This interesting quote comes from JQ's Instagram:
... Although I know I am no failure. To the majority, I may always be remembered as one and that’s okay. While that may be the case in basketball, they say the greatest successes in life often emerge from the most difficult setbacks. I am fortunate to have earned over 7 figures in NIL and am quite eager to take advantage of the head start that has given me. And to have the opportunity to discover more about this incredible world and all it has to offer. And to be able to identify myself as someone other than a basketball player for the first time.

As good as JQ was at times, we were better off without him. He resorted to hero ball way too often. What makes Sears so good is that he gets his teammates involved more than JQ ever did. I wish JQ well in his non-basketball life.

Might not be a coincidence. Seven figures in NIL for him would lend credence to your speculation

Not knowing how it will all play out in Memphis, maybe he's thinking he better take his money and run. Perhaps he's betting he has a better chance of holding on to it, if he's not on the roster. :)

Definitely see that.

His time there isn’t going well from a team standpoint either. I’m sure he expected more success

I thought he was out of eligibility anyways. I figured it just meant he wasn't pursuing a career in basketball professionally. I hope he finds what he loves.

I think last season was his fifth year, so I would think you are correct. :)

Why would you put out for public consumption that you made "seven figures" in NIL? Rhetorical question, of course. I guess that's his proof he wasn't a "failure." At any rate, I wouldn't want anyone knowing what I got in NIL. For now, at least, those numbers are confidential (as much as it can be).
