Post season thread...

I really do have bad feelings about this if Grant is fired.. I really do....

Worst thing that would happen is we don't win any SEC tourney games, don't go to the NIT, don't got to the NCAA tourney, .........wait a minute!

And in other related news, UAB won their game against MTSU today to capture the C-USA tourney and an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. And we'll be staying home. That in itself speaks volumes about the two programs (especially ours). It also answers the question of why we do not want to play them in basketball!

The worst thing we do is hire a coach, and he push the program back even further, and we end up losing some of players to transfers.... and I'll say this... We better produce quality wins 20 and plus the next two years if we get a new coach, and I promise, If we don't, I will spend all my free times saying " I TOLD YOU SO" to every single person that will listen to me :) .. Wait a min....:)

That's going to happen anyway. May as well get the first year over next season.

No- it really does not. Not playing UAB is about politics- nothing to do with fear of losing to them as you are implying.

Well, I'm hearing we may lose some to transfer specifically if Grant stays. At any rate, a new coach is not going to have much to work with until a recruiting cycle or two...

Mike Davis seems to get his teams to the Dance. He's back again with Texas Southern for the 2nd time in two years and only making 200K a year. I wonder what would happen if "Mama Called"?

He had early success at Indiana but got run off after three bad seasons, but following Bobby Knight wasn't going to be easy for anyone.

He did well at UAB, winning 20 games four straight years. But he got fired after one bad season. From reading the UAB board, their fans just never liked him to begin with.

He would not be a big step up from Grant. A nice guy and a decent coach, but I don't see him taking us to the next level.

After 7 years, which level is that?

Why would kids want to play in a half-empty coliseum? Have you ever thought that might be why they are transfering? I know football is king at Alabama and I am one of the biggest football fans. But even when Shula was there we 9 times out of 10 sold out the stadium and we had several losing seasons while he was there.

The kids on the basketball team deserve the fans that can be there to be there supporting them. I wish I could be, but I am four hours away and I work so unless it is on a Saturday, I can't come.

Anyway that's ,my two cents for whatever it is worth.

RTR

I remember when Coleman was routinely packed and absolutely rocking. The fans are there when the commitment is there. The whole "there is NO fan base for Bball" is a TOTAL crock.

If you want regular trips to the Sweet 16, I do not think he is who I would hire. I think anyone would be an improvement, but I want more than just a small step up.

I'll do it for 150K a year and a box seat for football games. If we don't make it to the Dance within 3 years, I'll fire myself.

We have some folks right here on TF whom would be an improvement. Hey Lance, are you interested?

I think that Mike Davis would run circles around Grant in recruiting from the JUCO ranks and getting area talent. He seems to be able to actually make something happen with his players once he gets them.

My big thought on this is if the "basketball world" is going to lay blame on Alabama for the "failure" of Anthony Grant. When in reality it is his own doing.

Good article today from Cecil.

"Small stings do accumulate. So does landing outside of the conversation, and in basketball, the conversation that matters occurs in March. Alabama isn’t a part of that. It wasn’t discussed this weekend as the Auburn coach sopped up air time like a biscuit in a gravy boat, selling its positives. UAB will be a national story, even if it is a one-and-done in its NCAA appearance. That is publicity you cannot buy."

The thing is, everyone knew Bruce Pearl could be that guy (that doesn't mean he can be at Auburn, Auburn in basketball is kind of like Vanderbilt is in football). But, even amongst those growing tired of Grant, no one seemed to want him in the same athletic department as the football program, but he was available. I guess that shows where the basketball program is on the totem pole, they had their chance.

I suppose that's the main hangup now, it isn't the knowledge that Grant is not the guy, it comes down to who is? You don't want another underwhelming David Hobbs type hire, and Mike Davis was even a part of his staff... I don't see him as being the solution. To me, you want a guy that's at least coached a team in the Sweet 16, someone with a proven track record. Grant was hired in large part because of his success as an assistant, but that's always a crapshoot. Gottfried? Same thing, largely hired based on success as an assistant. Hobbs? Same...

I said this around the time of the Grant hiring, but Alabama has never had a head coach who actually already knew what it was like to coach a team at an elite level. For each Alabama head coach, what they've done at Alabama represents the peak of their careers really. That to me represents some pretty poor hiring. It makes sense in football, where you can't really go up from there, but basketball? There are better jobs, there are more successful programs, Alabama can't even manage to get someone that goes up in value as a commodity.

C.M. Newton came from a small school and Wimp was a career assistant. They did pretty well.

We aren't going to do better than a mid-major hire like Grant.

Pearl is slime. No thanks. Larry Brown is a great coach, but I don't want him, either. And not because he is old.
