Yep. When I first saw this guy I thought, "That lunatic is going to get himself eaten." I feel bad for the girlfriend, but at some point she should have realized this guy was a class one fool.

Thing about it was that he probably had bonded with his "neighborhood" bears. It's not possible to "tame" them at all, but it is possible to habituate them to the point that they don't regard you primarily as fodder They remain unpredictable. OTOH, free-ranging bears coming into the area had no idea of the arrangement and they apparently were the ones who just saw "food" when they saw him and the GF. So far as I know, no one has managed to habituate polar bears even to the point he did. IIRC, it took him a while to convince the GF it was OK, since he'd managed not to be eaten. I feel sorry for her, not for him...

I had never heard of the guy until I saw Grisly Man. I knew nothing of this story and still I saw it coming. Especially whe I heard this idiot say "Oh, here are my friends" when talking about the bears. I joked "your friends are going to eat you"

Yes that is what happened - he stayed one week past what was considered to be reasonably safe. The rover bears came in and there was no existing "relationship" and the rest was history.

The girlfriend was not a "happy camper"....and ultimately both paid the price.
