JessN: Potential transfer portal targets as Bama remakes its roster

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Just guessing, but it appears that a good bit of the “portal ranking” is based on their HS “recruiting ranking”. Pritchett was a 5 star according to some in his HS rankings. As is in many cases they miss by a mile. Alabama has let 4 HS 5 stars go this off season: Pritchett, Haynes, ?Oatis?, ?. They miss on many, does not mean they are worthless, but for any specific player to depend on their evaluation is foolish. A personal observation: I thought Haynes was a can’t miss prospect and couldn’t wait til others left so he could show his stuff. You just never know.

Btw, it’s not Pritchett’s fault that he was misevaluated and hopefully he will find success elsewhere. It’s unfortunate that some will say he is throwing away his talent or that Alabama did not do a good job developing him. In reality, it appears that he was simply misevaluated. It’s a rare talent and even real experts like Saban miss close to 50%. Especially for OL & QBs.

Agree. It has to have a heavy lean to HS ranking, at least for the backup players. Alexander transferring to Clemson was a news story on the ESPN website. How is that even news?

I don’t necessarily like losing players to the portal, but I realize it’s just part of the game now and we haven’t lost anyone that would be a key starter next year. On the flip side, we’ve probably added at least one or two starters for next year, so I see it as a net improvement, particularly when you factor in that we had to reduce numbers.

There will be a change in leadership in the locker room, which is probably for the best, and hopefully these guys that are coming back take that leadership role to the next level. I hope choosing who goes to Media Days is a difficult task for DeBoer.
This I believe was severely lacking this year. I think the influx of players on that side of the ball coming back signals that they intend to not only finish strong but hold each other accountable

I read about Peter Knudson (TE from Weber State) coming to Tuscaloosa.
The write-up said, "nine receptions for 63 yards and a touchdown across 12 games played." Those are not exactly jaw-dropping stats, but "Welcome to Tuscaloosa, Mr. Knudson."

If Pate's statement about Alabama's similar performance to OSU with the portal is true, then Knudson is probably being added for depth and is not expected to be a starter. The only player I see who is being brought in for legit starts is the WR from Miami, Horton.

He is a walk-on but could have signed with some smaller schools. Here is an article with interviews. I will take him all day long with his attitude.

Yep. No problem with a guy who wants to be here.
"It was just what the team needed me to do," he said.
What is this sorcery?

I listened to an interview last night with Urban Meyer and he said the OL position has now become the hardest most inconsistent position to scout and recruit. He said with all the specialized camps for QB's, receivers and running backs, it is now easier to scout these positions.

He said back when he was at Florida and OSU, if the OL recruit DIDN'T play basketball that was an immediate red flag. If the kid played basketball you knew you probably had a very good athlete.

Well that last part is nice to hear because our incoming true freshman Jackson Loyd was apparently a pretty good basketball player

He will likely command $4-5 million per year. I doubt that we have such money available for a QB
I certainly wouldn't want us to pay that much for him. I'm not sure Georgia wins the SEC if Beck doesn't get injured. I'd rather go with the unknown commodities that we already have, because we already know what Beck is. We can definitely do better than what he did this year.

I just meant it’s crazy that he’s in the portal. If he had stayed with us, we likely have 2 titles.

If "if's" and "but's" were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas. We certainly wouldn't of had the QB problems we've had the past two years.

Since it’s no longer against the rules to have an agent I guess declaring means nothing. Wonder if we see players who don’t get drafted or don’t go as high as they want try to come back? Strange times.

They can’t come back after Jan 15 deadline (Jan 25 for playoff teams)
You can declare whatever you want before the deadline date.
