QB Competition 2018

Here's what I'm really afraid of. We don't do anything different and we lose to Clemson. You think this thread is bulky now. If that happens this could rival the hat thread.

This thought sits quietly in the back of mind as a possibility. I really, really, REALLY hope this isn't the case come January 1st. We all assume that when looking at film and assessing everything, CNS comes to the same conclusions as we do. That our offensive game plan needs changing. Because, we all know, if he truly watches the film he'll agree with us, the fans.

If we don't make any adjustments and we struggle like we did against Auburn to get our RBs involved because the QB is getting 3-1 rushes to them AND if we can't throw the ball any better and CNS leaves Tua on the bench and we lose, there will be some serious questions about CNS afterward.

I agree and there should be. I'm about 99% sure we'll see adjustments. I just don't see how there couldn't be. But yeah, if they stroll out a replica game plan of the Auburn game out there and it produces the same results. I'll be putting stuff through sheet rock at my house.

Anyone know the number to a local moving company?

Maybe the saving grace against Clemson will be a defense will be back stronger than they have been in a long time! I don't know how many points it takes against Clemson to win the game. If our defense is great, maybe only 20?

But if OU beats Georgia like I figure they will, we are going to have to be prepared to score a lot of points against the Sooners. Maybe we can run through their defense like swiss cheese but I still think it'll take a much more balanced attack and require scoring lots of points...probably at least 35. JMO.

The challenge isn't CNS or the game plan...it is what JH will DO once the ball is kicked off. Habits are hard to break...particularly under pressure. Just try and change your golf swing and see how that works for you...good on the range...not so good on the course.

I am praying that our OL has the game(s) of their lives...if that happens then we will win going away. If not...my Clemson friends will be worse than AU friends...no, that's not possible.

Clemson's offense isn't the same as the last two years with Watson. Look at 2016 team stats compared to 2017. Glaring difference in the passing game. I completely see why they struggled against Auburn's defense. If Auburn hadn't of been figuring out how to use Stidham they would have more than likely beat the breaks off of Clemson.

Yep, biggest difference is their passing numbers. I hope it means we can make them more one dimensional. Could be a low scoring affair if our defense has rebounded.

But, I would say if what you say is true and what JH does is unpredictable after kickoff and cannot break certain habits , then ultimately that does fall back to the coaching staff and what decisions they decide to or not decide to make. At some point, those habits have to break for the better and for the benefit of the team.

Yes...and at what point do you make that decision? Gonna be interesting...

This article is one month old, but I hadn't seen it before. It's about JH and his brother, who apparently gives him a lot of QB advice. One thing that I noticed that might be of interest to some people here:
Jalen will usually FaceTime Averion and discuss the texts once he gets home. Mostly, Jalen will agree with his brother's critiques. Sometimes, though, he'll explain something his brother didn't realize about the design of a specific play, like when Averion brought up a run-pass option play earlier this season.

Averion thought his brother took off running too quickly instead of being patient in the pocket. Jalen explained, though, that he has one read on that play and that he's supposed to take off running if that receiver isn't open.
Given how many critical comments there have been about Jalen's decisions to leave the pocket after one read, this made me wonder: how often does he leave too early on his own, and how often is it the coaches' coaching?

Agree. And not only are habits hard to break, some limitations can be impossible to overcome, or at best difficult to change significantly from one game to the next, even if it is 4 weeks away. Despite his nonchalant playing manner, CNS has said more than once that Jalen's work ethic and desire to improve are second to none, and he's very coachable; so, he has been working on his shortcomings and he desperately wants to improve, and IMO, has improved some from last year. But how much can things like pocket presence, pocket patience, anticipation, quick decisions, accuracy, etc. change from one game to the next ? They must adapt to what he does well - this is not a time to be developing someone's game :).

Possibly, but AU's offense was so horrendous (~119 tot yds, 38 after their 2nd possession - incredible) that Clemson did not feel the need to do much offensively. If they felt threatened then they would have likely been able to produce more, maybe not enough, but more.

Isn't the real question why he only has one read when Tua has more?

I do believe we have a better chance to win the game with him calling plays, but my point above was that you can't blame him for something he wasn't part of. He and CNS were obviously in conflict and CNS exercised his authority and his right to make a decision to turn it over to Sarkisian for the final game. From that time on it's CSS and the staff, not CLK, like him or not. I base my belief(on the first sentence) on what the offense and team accomplished under him from his arrival to his termination and what he's done since at FAU. Then I simply plug the Championship game into the sequence and feel good about the possibility. On this board, I know I'm in the minority, and that's okay. It's an opinion board, and I respect others' whether I agree with them or not.
Look - he went missing the night before the semi game and wasn't located until 2:00 AM, not in very good shape, at that. They tried to repair him, but he was calling plays which didn't exist during the semi game. Taking a chance on keeping him in decent shape enough to coach, even ignoring the distractions issues, until the next game was problematic, at best. He's a man with a huge unaddressed problem. He took himself out of the final game, whether you believe it or not and no matter what you opinion is...
