QB Star Jackson Update

Yeah, this was an old thread so notice that article was written back in June. A LOT has changed since then and schools are taking notice of SJ.

Well....So much for the update

Yeah, I know. I'm afraid that none of us have anything new and we are starting to run into the fan's version of 'cabin fever'. With no news, we are dissecting everything.

Give it another five or ten minutes, and we'll have news on another thread to discuss (Damian Square). Hope it's good.

First of all, I hope I am wrong. I know the guy is a 4-Star recruit, but I just don't see the next great qb, ready to take us to a championship. I saw his video on youtube. Don't get me wrong, he does have talent (good touch, can scramble, etc.), but he just doesn't look like the caliper qb we need. He seems to throw a lot of balls up for grab and I am not sure he can throw the deep ball (even though he throws 20-25 yd posts). Before you shoot arrows, I hope I am wrong. Maybe I will get more excited at a later date???

He is still in high school, Years away from their completely developed talent level.
Recruits are primarily judged on "RAW" Talent because they are so young and recieve sub college level coaching. I see 4 stars as pure raw talent and 5 stars as talent that can make an imediate impact on the next level. The things I look for the most in videos are AWARENESS AWARENESS AWARENESS. Is the WR he is lofting it to the only option? Its hard to tell in home movies. He might be AWare of a height advantage in his WR over the CB or SS/FS which means he can put loft on it. Watch how SJ reacts in the pocket. He is completely aware of his amount of time that he can hold onto the ball. Usually releasing .5 seconds before getting hit, and he doesnt waver.

I've said it before, but no one is looking at Star's Jr. footage to offer him. He worked a ton this off-season on his passing. He knew it needed work and he did it. Reports from the Elite 11 had him throwing as good a ball as the big dogs....maybe not quite as consistently.

Plus, he's a stud athlete. He is the definition of a dual-threat QB.

As for why the FL schools aren't recruiting him....

UF- Newton, Brantley, and a JuCo kid last year. Plus, they have like 16 slots this year. It was Pryor or no one for them.

FSU- if not for Manuel, Star would've been in line within their next 2 choices.

UM- got local star Jacory Harris to commit early.

Just to echo what RTO said, Star went to the Elite 11 camp and put on a tremendous performance. He was widely considered one of the top performers at the entire camp. This guy has improved in leaps and bounds as a QB between last year and now, and the future is very bright for him at the position.

This guy would be a perfect fit for Coach Applewhite's spread offense and we would use him in a Vince Young-type of role. He's that good of an athlete. The thing I liked about him in his videos was that he was very accurate and consistently put the ball on the money. Arm's not terribly strong, but he gets it to the WRs in the right place and on time. If we are lucky enough to get him, he will prove all you doubters wrong! He's a stud!

For those of you that thinks he is the next Joe Namath (5 star), why isn't he being recruited by Florida, FSU, LSU, Tennessee, etc.? He lists Rutgers, West Virginia (no offense, but I would like to think our program is more nationally known), South Florida, etc., etc. Trust me, 5 Star qbs don't fly under the radar and haven't in years. If he was great or had potential to be great, are you telling me they wouldn't be after him? Like I said, I wish him the best and will support him faithfully if he signs, but I do have my doubts he is what we need. I know I sound terrible, but I am looking for CNS to sign another John Elway, Joe Montana, Kenny Stabler, etc. We haven't had a national qb in years (hopefully, Brodie will change that).

Same as last year with Marve . We beat teams to the punch in evaluating .

this guy is almost a Vince Young clone at this stage of his development, maybe with a better arm. I think he could be an all-world type of QB, if he can come in and learn the offense. CMA will work wonders with this guy.

let's go ahead and sign him, and then develop him. he is not on the radar because he is a mediocre player. if CNS wants him then i do too.

Being a dual threat type of QB doesn't make you Vince Young. There really aren't many similarities between the two at all.

Are you kidding? Have you seen his video? Try tall, lean, athletic, cerebral, and they both have an unusual but effective throwing motion. Star can be a great one here at the Capstone!

for every Vince Young there's an Aaron Brooks; good raw talent but just can't figure it out. I can't tell the difference so early, which is why I will defer to CNS.

Myself, I prefer a JPW type. I don't mind a pocket passer with a militia of WRs to throw to and a stud back lined up behind him. I'm not poo-poo'ing the spread offense, just my preference. But I'll take whatever brings us some more NCs!

I didn't resurrect the thread for the "experts" to de-bone this young man. I was wondering if there was a back up plan in case he didn't commit. I was really wondering if his weight was correct, I would like to see him around 210-215 lbs.

He has got to have some talent or the staff wouldn't offer. Always remember that these kids are not getting the kind of coaching that they will at Bama. This makes them all "projects", just at varying stages of completion.

Most QB's are busts (not saying Jackson will be). But it just seems like QB's, more than other positions, are harder to judge. I find it hard to ever get hyped up on a QB in HS.

Seems like a fair assessment. The other 10 guys on offense can also turn a QB into nothing but a winner. If Star Jackson is high on our recruiting list I don't care which other schools are offering.

It would be nice if no other schools would offer the kids we want.:biggrin2:

It would be best if you used one of the sarcastic smilies if you are indeed trying to be sarcastic with this statement like I hope you are. If not, then I don't really know what to say to you.

I think it was a misspeak. lol I think his intended meaning was - He isnt on the radar because he is a mediocre player, but because he is a very good player. I dont want to put words in his mouth so to speak, but thats how I took it. Like you, I hope he didnt mean it to say how it sounded.

Do the people at the Elite 11 QB camp just ask anyone or do they draw names for the attendees? I would guess that is how the candidates like Gabbert, Luck, etc. where invited. Then Rivals and Scout just throw up the stars and see how many fall by your name and that is how many you get.
I suppose that is how it is done. Am I wrong?

Yes, you're wrong. I'm pretty sure I read that Gabbert was lights out at the Elite 11 camp.

Young's taller, faster, bigger, has a much better feel for defenses, has a much stronger arm, and is much more of a dominating athlete. Star's never gonna be that guy that throws for 3000+ yards and rushes for 1000+ in a season, a-la Young. And that's not a knock on Star, it is a testament to how dominating Young was.

Similarities between Young and Star basically begin and end dual-threat and undeveloped.
