How do you minimize fire flare ups?

I just bought a new Brinkman gas grill and I was cooking some burgers on it last night. This was the third time using it and I had the worst fire flare up I have ever seen cooking on gas grills. I basically cut the gas off and cooked without it because the flare up was that bad. I do not use lava rocks.

Put a drip pan under your meat.

You gotta use lava rocks and treat them like family heirlooms. The more the drippings fall on them, the more flavor they'll add to your cooking.

True, the lava rocks do add that seasoned flavor that some say gas grills lack over charcoal. I have used ceramic brickettes in one of my old gas grills which were not as porous as natural lava rock and did seem to tone down some of the flair ups.

Some grills now have shields over the burners which keep grease from reaching open flames and igniting. The best of these IMO is the Holland. Read some of the testamonials from some users and it is obvious I am prejudice towards the Holland having owned one for several years now. What Holland claims is true, flair ups are impossible if you use the grill correctly. The Holland uses what they call a flavor shield which you must season like a cast iron skillet. It works.

This site rates a top 10 class of gas grills. The rankings are subjective though, kind of like which automobile is best in the $20,000 range. TOP 10 It's a darned good top 10.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This grill did come with shields over all three burners, but evidently that isn't enough. I guess I will give the lave rocks or brickettes a try. I have always used lava rocks before, but the other grills always came with the rocks and were a lot smaller.
