R. Lee Ermey has passed away...

Well at least now the afterlife is about to get whipped into shape like never before.

Sorry to hear he passed. His performance in Platoon was iconic. There are only a few people who penetrate the subconscious of a whole generation but I think he was one of them.

What a character. Who would think a former drill sergeant would make such a great comedic actor. He alway cracked me up. RIP gunny

I love the story that he was supposed to be only a technical adviser on Full Metal Jacket but Kubrick heard him dressing down a few extras for some reason and decided he should have the role that ended up launching his acting career. No idea if that is fully true but it is a great story

my favorite is a little more off the beaten path of what he is known for

The Reverend Jimmy Lee Farnsworth

Oh absolutely!!!

Mimicking Jimmy Lee Swaggart, way down there in Lose-anna, and loved the exchange:

Jimmy Lee: "You don't think I used too many pictures of mah self do ya?"

Fletch: "Oh no. It worked for the Ayatollah."

Not as well known but his role in Saving Silverman cracks me up. Back when I still had roommates we would keep Full Metal Jacket on repeat near about and constantly quote it.

That is correct. He ad libbed most of his dialogue.

Another fun performance is in The Frighteners, where he kind of parodies his FMJ character.

Another good movie Ermey starred in about Vietnam, is "The Siege of Firebase Gloria." Most people never heard of it probably because it was Australian produced in the late 1980's, but if you get the chance watch it.
