I'm watching the replay of his media session on ESPNU and he's like Jerry Clower disguised as football coach.

Finebaum was pretty brutal on him. Said that the Vandy HC should at least be someone that could get into VU. He thinks Johnson's "retirement" was orchestrated in order to get the job for Caldwell. He just might be right considering the timing of Johnson choosing to step down. :conf3:

I agree, I think that, Coach Johnson waited until now to step down so his staff could all keep their jobs. It's a little to close to the season opener to: search for and find new coach head coach, and for that coach to hire a new staff. What Coach Johnson did for his friends may be commendable, but what he did to his players was pretty low.

and what he did to the University - i listened to this guy on Finebaum and just couldn't believe it....out of all the universities, this guy is representing Vandy?

no doubt it will be interim only...

I know players are suppose to sign with a school and not the coach but the reality isn't that way. If kids simply signed with the school and not the coach Bama's recruiting under Saban would be no different than under Shula. Enough said...

I imagine some players that signed with Vandy because they had a relationship with Johnson are more than disappointed. Unless the players grew up Vandy fans or just love the idea of a great education I would expect to see some transfers.

man i thought the guy was awesome and a refreshing change....if i were playing at vandy i would be behind a coach like that 100%. I am hoping it all works out for him there honestly!

i mean the guy is humble, truthful and shows emotion and excitement what else does a place like VANDY need? I could not stop watching his interview and the media loved it as well. He will prob be able to get some decent kids in there to play with that personality especially with southern parents.

Bottom line it really won't make any difference who the Vanderbilt coach is interim or permanent, they will always be a bottom feeder and their fanbase will show up 27,000 strong every Saturday.

So was Woody Widenhofer.

Supposedly the incoming Freshmen have decided as a group to stay and not transfer.

That's not surprising, really. Most players--especially incoming players--would have a better relationship with their recruiter/position coach than the head man, and I believe the entire staff is staying on.

Vandy's schedule is pretty rough. Even matching the wins from last year might be tough, so anything resembling progress might actually get this guy the job.

As far as the "culture" fit for Vandy, he's not it but that doesn't matter. If anyone at the school cared about Vandy athletics they would schedule more friendly OOC games to help the team make it to bowl eligibility.

I wish the guy luck. He'll need it.

Johnson himself said that the timing was intentional, so that his staff would be able to keep their jobs at least one more season.

And I just read in the latest SI where they say that Johnson tells them it had nothing to do with his retiring. But when 104.5 The Zone up here interviewed him and brought that up, he alluded to the notion that the timing was a factor.

I heard the interview too with Finebaum. I thought Finebaum was pretty unprofessional. He makes his living talking about others behind their back. But that was the first time I heard Finebaum pretty much mock the a coach to his face on national TV.

Coach Caldwell needs to save all that good ole boy stuff for his players. But when he is in front any media he needs to recognize they are not his friends. He should have taken a more stern approach with Finebaum during the interview.

Also, there was a caller that said he'd be the first SEC coach that has to wear a helmet!:biggrin2::biggrin::cool2:

Of course, Coach Bryant wore one onto the field in '64 against Ga Tech at Grant Field because of the liquor bottles that were thrown by Tech fans there two years before.
