Game Thread: Rose Bowl (playoff semi-final): Oklahoma vs Georgia

GA was getting pressure with 4 man rush. Each time they blitzed they got burned. Perfect play calling on offense. The key will be what coach Saban beats into the head of our players. Play your position. Don't get out of your lane. Win your play each time and the rest will take care of itself. That's what has killed GA in the first half. Not executing and getting beat at your job.

I'm not trying to be snarky here - honest - but can any of you tell me how on earth you scheme against this offense?

Elite DL that can affect the passer and passing lanes if it is a quick pass. You have to play above average man to man coverage because match up zone is pretty poor against this due to the hesitation it creates in the DB reading run/pass then route patterns in his responsibility. Pure and simple, you have to throw out the traditional Nick Saban scheme of pattern match zone and run stuffing linemen. It breaks that defense. Smart has not really adjusted like we have and we still won't stop it all the time.

You either have the same kind of offense and get in a track meet, or you lean on your running game to control the clock and keep them off the field. Georgia can’t do the first, and for some reason refuses to try the second.

I think it begins on offense. Play ball control offense & shorten the game. Fast drives by you and not converting 3rd down plays right into their style.

You have to play nickle D with pattern match man and not get too far up field on your rush. You have to get pressure with your front 4 or 5. If you blitz you better have a Minkah/Evans type player off the edge who can get there fast and hope he gets “home”. With an accurate QB like Mayfield or Watson you have to understand they’re going to make plays. You’re just going to have to force some mistakes and hopefully turnovers.

Right now UGA is getting killed with badly timed/schemed blitzes. Baker is making them pay for it.

Goodness, ESPN never gets it right - just started half time and it's 6PM central - supposed to have a 7:45 kickoff for the Bama game...

Yep, I commented to my son when this game K/O... it was approx 415CST.... I said, at least we have a chance to kick at our scheduled time. Not so much anymore. Got to love ESPN (Blue Font).

What was the general consensus before this UGA-OU matchup? Georgia needed to run the ball and control the clock? Then Fromm comes out throwing?? I mean, do what got you here and make them stop you. This game is over.

RPO offense really makes the game a 1 on 1 matchup and if you lose at too many positions then you're likely in for a long day. That is the simple way of putting it.

I think UGA's DL is plodding like our early Saban DLs. Their LBs aren't as fast side to side when they're in this extended read and react situation. They do great when they have the play diagnosed but the RPO exposes their athletic slow-footedness. Their DBs aren't that great man cover guys.

This was a mismatch and UGA's only hope was their run game dominating OU's D. They have but Fromm hasn't been consistent enough to maintain possession.

I agree - Smart drew up the one game plan that helped the Sooners and hurt his team just to outsmart the other team. He is saying, "we will beat you in the air", and calling pass plays even when OU is not loading the box.

They are playing this game as if it were a chess match. It isn't. It is football. You play to your strengths and take what the defense gives you.

That is exactly how I think we should play tonight and in the championship game. We have the talent on both sides of the ball to execute. If we commit to that we will win #17!

You have to be overly aggressive and force turnovers. And you have to take several hits on Mayfield. Some, just for fun.
