Roster Management

I'm a little surprised that CNO is even recruiting centers. Not much of fit in the offense, unless he's strictly looking for a rim protector and pnr guy
You HAVE to have a rim protector. You can get away with having only 4 guys on the floor that can shoot the 3 as long as one of those guys is a rim protector, PNR guy (like you said), rim runner type player. Very athletic guy that can get up and down the floor (think Clint Capela in the NBA).

I was told, personally, by a good friend, works in the recruiting business, that we were not even pursuing Anselem anymore. We wanted him for the 2021 class in case Bidiako turned us down.
Makes sense, Bediako is our number one priority. He can set the standard of what we are looking for the position going forward. Right now, we are looking pretty good for him and he's cooled on the team that would have been the biggest threat to us in Duke. Still a long ways to go though but I hope he Rolls with the Tide, would love to see him here.

Watched Capela here for 5 years, so mostly agree. Until the league stopped, the Rox were doing well starting PJ Tucker at center. Of course, with their defensive philosophy (switch everything) they could get away with it. And Capela had issues guarding at the perimeter. Don't think you could teach and execute this well at the college level. Not enough practice time available, and it takes a lot of hours to get good at. So having an athletic 6-11 type will help us.

You could see the NBA influence on our Defense. Charlie Henry ran the D. He was an NBA assistant for years, and then the Bulls G league team’s Head Coach. He tried switching on the perimeter some, but we just didn’t have the guys to do it. I remember the UF game when we switched Galin off on a guard on the top of the key. I don’t think that’s the coverage we were supposed to be in, but switching Galin onto a guard is a recipe for disaster. I know you have to change up your PNR coverages throughout the game, but when Galin or Javian were on the court, I would have Iced or hard hedged every ball screen. Early on in the season, we were soft hedging and pinching from the corner, but we didn’t recover quick enough to play that type of PNR coverage. Later in the season teams realized that we didn’t have a rim protector, and Herb was really the only ball stopper that we had, so teams just beat us off the bounce without a ball screen.

Now that we have Bruner, I would expect more switching of ball screens. We will be way more flexible with our length. We will have multiple guys that can guard multiple positions.

On a different note, I’m a Hawks fan, so I’m excited about Capela, but I want to know what to expect. I’m really excited about him in the PNR with Trae Young, and we desperately needed a rim protector. I also think it was a good move on Houston’s part, Houston, just like Golden State, plays better with a small lineup.

I think if the guards can learn to switch out front that will be a big help. I think we did a little bit towards the end of the season. If we get to where we could switch everything we would be a handful.

Capela has several pluses. Good rebounder, good rim protector, good defender on the block, and can run in transition. A Harden drive and lob was money. Minus is not much offense otherwise, and isn’t great on the perimeter if switched onto a quick guard.

Man, a 6' 10" type player who can run, shoot the 3, put his back to the basket (when needed) and defend the rim would be the perfect fit for a CNO offense. Unfortunately, those guys just don't grow on trees.

That is what a lot of people don’t understand. Those guys aren’t a dime a dozen. However, that is what we will have in Bruner. I’m so excited about him.

Those guys would go straight to the pros from high school and be a top 3 pick 😀

The good thing is he bb/travel leagues are encouraging that skill set in big men more so over time we will see that evolve more. More Anthony Davis types imo. It's funny the euro leagues/overseas has more big men that fit the bill. We've been slow to catch on for some reason.

Those guys would have to play one year in college or go to the new G League for a year. I think 3 high profile HS players have signed with the G League but hopefully not too many more will.

The Euro envasion big man run really began with Dirk before US basketball started thinking about centers the way they do. Hoping we begin developing more big men in this mold.

Here is how our roster stands at the moment. We still don't know if Petty is going to return or not but given his and CNO's recent comments there appears to be more of a chance that will happen than we thought a short time ago. Unless we have a surprise defection the roster would appear to be just about set for the upcoming season and quite frankly I'm very excited when I look at the possibilities given the versatility of each player.
  1. F - Alex Reese (Sr)
  2. F - Herb Jones (Sr)
  3. G/F - John Petty (Sr) (Still uncertain if he will return or not)
  4. F/C Jordan Bruner (Sr)
  5. F - James Rojas (Jr)
  6. CG Keon Ellis (Jr)
  7. PG - Jahvon Quinerly (So)
  8. SG - Jaden Shackelford (So)
  9. F/C - Javian Davis (So)
  10. F - Juwan Gary (Fr)
  11. G/F Keon Ambrose (Fr)
  12. PG Josh Primo (Fr)
  13. SF Darius Miles (Fr)
