Saban on expectations

There's a difference between expectations and hopes. Realistically, I hope that we're in the mix for the national title in the next couple of years. By "in the mix", I mean winning our conference title game. What I *expect* is to field a competitive team that is respected and feared nationally and that puts it all out on the field. I'm not going to throw my hands up in disgust and lose my patience with CNS if we don't land a national title in the immediate future. For the first time in a long time, I *know* our team is in good hands and I trust in its leadership. Every year I see us getting deeper in talent too. That gives me more hope than I have had in a long time. And hope has been the short commodity, not expectation.

I understand what he's getting at. I just believe that things can break right again for us to have a magical season. Of course, winning 9-10 ballgames and going to the Capital One Bowl doesn't hurt my feelings either.

Alabama Football is on the verge of transitioning from a "rebuilding" mode to a "reloading" mode and CNS will be challenged to manage expections accordingly.

"You're at the precipice of an enormous crossroads"

I know I should expect excellence at Alabama...

But if a 9 win season is a down year...I'll take it.

That said...I think we should challenge for an SEC Championship every year as long as we have the tools to do so. This was something we did under Coach Stallings and it's something Florida has been doing over the past several years. It can be done...we just have to handle our business one game at a time.

Let's get those Hokies!!!

I agree 100%! And I have no problem at all with Coach Saban reminding us we're not entitled to an NC. It takes skilled players, skilled coaches, commitment, focus, and lots of luck. A strong, supportive fan base can help - or hurt - our players in the commitment and focus categories. Supporting them is our job. Also donating to Alabama if we're able to do so. :)

Well said.

I understand what he's saying. Really, I do, but I'm tired of hearing it. This is the epitome of a broken record. Reporters need to stop asking this question or he needs to refuse to answer it. I've heard this every year since he got here. Same line and verse. I get it. I understand it. I think everyone does. I'm over it. Move on. Find a new tack. PLease.

Get used to it because it's Saban's way of providing material without disclosing anything of importance. He knows he has to talk to the media and answer questions. So he forms a standard response, uniform response to specific types of questions. Anytime it's asked he just pulls out the standard response and issues it. He's just trying to get through the interview and questions. He's not really trying to reveal anything worth while.

Anything worth while is kept in house, as it should.

He probably has to say it to some extent. A large part of it probably isn't even the fans. Honestly, every fellow fan I have ever talked to has been tempered by our years of famine, as it were. Every single Alabama fan I know seems to have a clear head that a national championship, while nice, isn't an immediate birthright of our team just by virtue of the name. It's earned on the field and we're in the process of loading ourselves with talent so that we're at least on an even playing field with teams like Florida or USC.

The media, on the other hand, seems to use the word "expectation" in connection with Alabama almost as much as the word "change" was used in conjunction with a certain presidential candidate. In other words, it sounds nice at first, but after a while it becomes over-used and cliche. It's also universally attributed to our fan base. I'm not saying there aren't some how fit that bill. However, I don't see it any more in evidence here than I do with other elite programs.

Frankly, *I* get sick of hearing about it from the announcers every time a game opens. I think what most of us are uncomfortable with is less about CNS' tempering of expectations and more about the fact that the media has pinned those expectations so firmly and disproportionately on us. Thus, when CNS talks about tempering expectations, whether or not he uses the words "our fans", it looks like a criticism of us, which I doubt is the intent. I suspect that his focus is as much (if not more) on the media scrutiny as it is the fans.

“We’re not results oriented. We’re process oriented,” he added. “I don’t want external factors to affect our players. Sometimes expectations can do that because you’re focused on the wrong thing. You’re not focused on what you need to do to be a good player. You’re focused on the result, and then you don’t do the things you need to do to get the results. That’s the world we try to stay in.”

That's it in a nutshell...

The "process oriented not result oriented" line is complete bull. The process only matters IF it gets the desired result, which is the main goal. No one cares about the process if Bama losses (except that the process needs to be changed).

Right on. +1

Sometimes I think people are scared to say ,"Just WIN!" Try to do it in a sustainable and correct fashion, but please ,"Just WIN!"

I agree to an extent. Maybe I'm just tired of the local media reporting it over and over again like it's brand new material. I mean, look at the article in question. The author didn't even have to write anything. 2/3rds of this thing are quotes directly from Coach Saban. Lazy reporter. Lazy writing. It's May...put the Coach Saban CD on repeat/shuffle until August I'm going to the Beach.

We're going to suffer a few losses in order to get to where we want to be (i.e. a national powerhouse that contends for a national title most years). If we have a few 9-3 seasons before we get there because we're focusing on the process rather than obsessing about winning the national title THAT year, I am content with that.

Rome wasn't built in a day. Neither will this team go from a disappoint under CMS to a consistent MNC contender in the first couple of years under CNS.

It's all about demanding excellence every day, thus being a process. We had a magical year last year, but I feel we still have a ways to go. Bottom line: Coach Saban is correct.

I believe that the "Process" is justified and if achieved the way CNS has intended, it will produce results. We just have to follow the gameplan and execute. We do that and we should win.

Since I attended my first Bama game at age six I've always tried to manage my expectations. By that I mean I've expected us to win every single game and every national title every year since. :)
