That is kind of the scenario, and that sort of thing has crossed my mind. Nick Saban is the coaching equivalent of the most beautiful woman in the world. Alabama's not exactly ugly, but they have to compete with literally every single guy out there.
But are we the guy with the Nice Car? The guy that comes from money? Or the guy that impresses in the bedroom?
It's like Brad Pitt wants your wife. You had better hope that she loves you because if she doesn't, you lose. I mean, she will think about the "kids" and her reputation, but come on - it's Brad Pitt.

When the day comes that Saban leaves, be it due to retirement or to take a job elsewhere, it is imperative that the administration and the fans move on much faster than they did back then. The continual efforts to hire someone close to Bryant were disastrous, with the exception of Stallings (although his tenure also ended unfavorably in the midst of NCAA sanctions).
