Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

I feel like an ugly guy dating a really hot girl.......
That is kind of the scenario, and that sort of thing has crossed my mind. Nick Saban is the coaching equivalent of the most beautiful woman in the world. Alabama's not exactly ugly, but they have to compete with literally every single guy out there.

But are we the guy with the Nice Car? The guy that comes from money? Or the guy that impresses in the bedroom?

It's like Brad Pitt wants your wife. You had better hope that she loves you because if she doesn't, you lose. I mean, she will think about the "kids" and her reputation, but come on - it's Brad Pitt.

Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

I see the football team as separate from the school. I am an alumni but my support of the team has nothing to do with my degree. I don't get excited when the business school wins an award or gets a celebrated new professor. But I was extremely happy when we hired Coach Saban. I did not get excited when the Bruno library was built.

If you want to withhold your money from the athletic department then fine. The money from the athletic department pays for all sports, and even gives some money back to the University. But if you are giving money to the educational side then keep doing so.

Another point that I have not seen here is that the revenues from the athletic department, as large as they are, is not the only source of revenue. When I went to the University, enrollment was less than 20,000, now it is over 35,000, and a large portion of those students are paying out of state tuition. (Probably in the hundreds of millions)
LOL! I hope you don't have multiple personalities. From your avatar, I'd guess you're really an alumnus. If you're female, then you're an alumna. If there's more than one of you, then, male, you're alumni. If plural female, then alumnae. I actually had to study Latin. In a public HS; in Decatur, AL...

Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

Forget his post. There's no way we'll pay ten million, or, at least, not this year...
I've tried to avoid badgering you, but you've said repeatedly that Alabama would match any offer.

So, are you just saying there's no way anyone else would offer him ten million, or that Alabama really has drawn a line they won't cross no matter what? I think ten million is a crazy number, and has only been tossed around as wild speculation (8 seems to be the highest reasonable number I've heard), but just wondering...

She better take note of what she's got at home. You want to talk about Brad Pitt? What about having to deal with Angelina Jolie and all of those kids during the holidays?

Definitely the guy that impresses in the bedroom. Think Lyle and Julia. Something had to make that work.

Finebaum was interviewing Brian Davis who writes for the Austin American-Statesman. This is what he said a former Chancellor at UTex told him:

"A former chancellor (at Texas) told me there is no way we'd pay those numbers (10yr/ $100 Million) for a Head Coach."

This reporter also told Paul that he didn't think Saban would be the next coach at Texas...

So even though having him and the success he has brought has led to more money for scholarships and faculty pay raises, we should show him the door?
I didn't say show him the door I said tell him to honor the deal he made less than a year ago and let him walk if he wants. It's entirely up to him.

Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

So that means 7-year $59.5M deal???
7M
7 1/2M
8M
8 1/2M
9M
9 1/2M
10M!!!
Kidding of course, but after looking at it kinda makes sense
I can't imagine more than $7M a year. Check this:

Of the nine pro coaches who make more than $6 million, eight of them are in the NFL: Payton, Patriots coach Bill Belichick ($7.5 million), Chiefs coach Andy Reid ($7.5 million), Seahawks coach Pete Carroll ($7 million), Rams coach Jeff Fisher ($7 million), Redskins coach Mike Shanahan ($7 million), Giants coach Tom Coughlin ($6.67 million) and Eagles coach Chip Kelly ($6.5 million).

If a college coach gets paid to much it is going to cause a massive effect even through the pro ranks. He would be the highest paid Football coach.

Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

I think that the ideal situation for Saban to leave would be retirement. That way, it doesn't necessarily destroy the recruiting class, it doesn't necessarily cause an exodus with players, or staff. In that scenario, I could certainly see the logic to promoting Kirby (with Saban's blessing).

But, if he leaves for a job like Texas? The whole thing becomes a mess, and if Alabama doesn't keep Kirby, then they'll lose a lot of what Saban has built, but if they do keep Kirby, they're basically working with leftovers.

I think if Saban leaves for Texas (which I still believe is unlikely), Alabama would need to open things up and look at all their options in terms of head coaches...
Well said. We certainly don't want a repeat of what happened after Bryant's tenure. When the day comes that Saban leaves, be it due to retirement or to take a job elsewhere, it is imperative that the administration and the fans move on much faster than they did back then. The continual efforts to hire someone close to Bryant were disastrous, with the exception of Stallings (although his tenure also ended unfavorably in the midst of NCAA sanctions).

If everyone will recall, the world believed that Will Muschamp (a great defensive coordinator) would make a tremendous head coach...until he became a head coach. The same scenario could play out with Kirby Smart. At the very least, a coaching search needs to be conducted. Smart should not be a "coach in waiting." Regardless, it is illogical to believe that there is any coach out there who would be a true replacement for Nick Saban - the man is in a league of his own.

Here's the problem for both Texas and Alabama - other than Nick Saban, I don't know of a well-rounded college coach with a proven track record of success who is available right now.
