Saban speaks out on Tide fans' behavior

It's rather obvious that it's the fraternity boys that are mostly responsible for the awful behavior after the game. The frat section is where you'll find the most drunk, ignorant, obnoxious and disgusting group of people in Bryant-Denny.

On the other hand I know of a couple that left the game Saturday because they were sitting near the UGA section and said they were catching a lot of abuse. They decided to leave in the first half.

The whole thing is sickening. From UGA celebrating in front of the UA section to the Bama fans throwing garbage at them. Very classless for Bama to be doing something like that. So they scored and won, they were in the heat of victory. I can't fault them for celebrating.

Now the Bama students could have cused, fliped them the bird, or done anything but throw cups and what not at those players. And to make matters worse, CNS has to address this nonsense, he is trying to get Bama ready for FSU, his job isn't trying to tell the students what they should and should not do.

Play and cheer w/passion. But when it's it over let it go and act like your mom was setting next to you.

Ya know, this is just sickening, because the actions of a "FEW" will now become "those Bama fans - they can't control a thing"...blah, blah, blah... AND IT DEOSN'T MATTER WHAT SOMEONE ELSE DID - we are ALABAMA - we don't have to get down in the dirt & dig, or "payback", or act like it's ok because "someone else did it"...

We're the most TALKESD ABOUTT fans in the country - even moreso than LSU fans. Good grief - it seems like we'd be so CAREFUL to avoid certain things to ERASE all this negative publicity we CONSTANTLY get! We have the image of trash-talking our own team, our coaches, throwing bricks in windows, putting 'for sale' signs in front of homes, publically trashing our own on talk-radio & the internet & in public, throwing bottles & whatever at opposing teams, booing our players, expecting way too far above reality in wins/seasons, and the list goes on & on... And above all - when an opposing school or fan taunts & tries to stir the pot , rather than becoming a hot-head over it - just ignoring & moving on would be in best taste...

GOSH - Just seems the best thing we could ALL do is at least "PRETEND" to have some class!!!! This is an important tool in attracting & KEEPING good coaching staffs, it is a tool for recruiting, we CANNOT let this stuff affect our program - I know that Saban loves a challenge & he was willing to come here to tackle the challenge of putting us back in shape - but he won't tolerate this type of thing, & we can look for him to leave if he has to put up with this crap over time. I mean - it is football - which we all have a passion for - but passion can still be classy!

Climbing off soapbox now...

The overwhelming majority of the cups and trash being thrown onto the field came from the Greek section, probably a 3-1 or 4-1 basis.

I don't understand why people try to blame it on one part of the student body then later on in the same sentence say it was coming from both greek and non-greek.

It was coming from BOTH, and both are responsible. End of story.

While I do agree that fans should not throw anything at players or anyone else I remember thinking at the end of OT that Georgia's players should not be celebrating right in front of the student section. Most teams would have moved immediately to the section where thier fans were seated and celebrated without incident. JMHO.
I heard that sentiment expressed Saturday night as well. And I told the guy to said it that that was ballocks.
Alabama, Wallace Gilberry in particular, selected that end zone as the one where they would play the overtime, because that was where the Alabama student section was. They wanted the moral support and noise help of the students. But, having selected to play in that section, it also means that, should Georgia win, they would win in front of the Alabama student section. The Dawgs mobbed their player where he won the game: in the end zone in front of the Alabama student section. But Alabama selected that end zone, not Georgia.

Uh, because the overwhelming majority were coming from the Greek section, maybe?
I didn't say it was only Greeks, just, from my peculiar vantage point on the boundary between the two sections, it was overwhelmingly Greeks throwing cups and garbage on the field and embarrassing the University.
If the shoe fits, wear it.
I would advise the Greeks at the University to not act like morons, even if they are morons, at least for the duration of football games. Act like a moron back at the frat house to your heart's content. Just don't embarrass the University with moronic behavior in public.
And to the University administration, I would suggest stronger measures to apprehend morons in the student section: more police, videocameras, etc.

See there you go again. Like you said it was BOTH groups of students. You should also advise the ones who weren't in the Greek section "to not act like morons" And to "Act like a moron back at the" dorm or where ever "to your heart's content."

That is really all I have to say about it.

Oh, I'm with you hippie, but every one is making it sound like it was some dispicable act. Yes it was bad, but the media and some of you make it sound like we were throwing rocks, broken beer bottles and metal objects at the players. Ane when I say "we", I mean the 7-10 people that did this.

Yesterday, Neal McCredy said he'd never take his son to a football game because of the fans and that some one was going to lose an eye from the PLASTIC cups and SHAKERS that were thrown from the stands.

Just really blown out of proportion. Roll Tide

What you just said....yeah, I'm 180 degrees from that.

We should send our biggest drunk, obnoxious people from our fraternities to Jacksonville on a party bus this weekend to the game. I guarantee you that the Florida State fans will be a bunch of wild, out of control idiots. I know from first hand experience with those jerks. They're a-holes.

The granting of the privilege of having reserved sections in the student section comes with some obligations (behave above the board), and it also has the effect of allowing misbehavior to identified with Greeks in a way that misbehavior of non-Greeks is more anonymous. Misbehavior from a frat's section can be, and should be, attributed to that frat.
And, in case you weren't reading closely enough, 75-80% of the trash was coming from the Greek section. If Greeks policed their own ranks (or the University policed those ranks for them), 75-80% of the problem would be fixed and the police could focus on the other 20-25%.
But I do agree with you on one point: throw out any student that hurls garbage on the field.

If Greeks policed their own ranks

I doubt that would ever happen.

Don't get me wrong I'm not defending the Fraternities even though I was in one. I think it was just as embarrassing as the next guy. If the University really wanted to do something about it they could always revoke block seating for any Fraternity in the area that cups are coming from. I know they revoked it for certain Fraternities when I was in school (can't remember the reason).

Personally I think that is what they should do/threaten. I guarantee that when a chapter is looking at loosing their prime block seating in the first 2 or 3 areas there would be some internal policing.

Just my 2 cents.

There's always going to be drunk obnoxious fans in the student section. We should just send our own drunk, obnoxious fans to the away games and they can act like morons all they want. As long as they don't do it too much in T-town that's cool with me. That might make us look bad. Probably can't do much about it anyway.

How do we know this was a Bama fan?? Also, Saban should be used to this kind of behavior. I'm sure this stuff happens all the time. There are idiot fans at every school.

As for the throwing stuff on the field, every one is blowing it out of proportion. I counted 7 PLASTIC cups thrown (5 from the endzone, 2 from the non-Greek FWIW) Also, last time I checked PLASTIC cups, MINIatures and SHAKERS have never hurt any one. I understand it's the principal, but the media and some of you are really blowing this thing up.

We were sitting section F west side and believe me - it was MORE than just 7 cups and it definitely came from Alabama "fans". Whether anyone is hurt or not is beside the point - it is classless. :BigA:

Saban sure did yell at our obnoxious fans throwing stuff at the game on Saturday. I just listened to the first hour of Finebaum's show from yesterday. He should yell at them more. Go to the frat houses or something. Get out a big frat house paddle and wallop them good. Get the obnoxious, drunk Bama fans to go to the away games and be idiots. I can't believe they were hurling racial slurs to the Georgia players at the game. Saban should get after those idiots.

I felt it, too.

If that won't work, put a 40 foot tall chain link fence between the student section and the field. Maybe shame will work where honor fails.

Like the chicken wire in "The Blues Brothers" ? Personally, I don't think security is doing its job at the gates, letting anyone in with alcohol. Maybe they need to check the co-ed's big purses a bit deeper.

The security guards would have to strip search the students to keep them from bringing in booze. A lot of them put rot gut grain alcohol in ziploc baggies and hide it in their underwear. They usually have enough booze to get the whole frat wasted. You can't really stop the students from getting drunk and obnoxious. If you try to stop them, they'll just try harder to do it just to spite the old 40+ crowd.
