Saban's Monday presser (MERGED THREADS)

Hey, we all like the gruff demeanor and the way he "tells it like it is" to the media. Those monkeys sitting there with recorders generally don't know much about football, but they do know what sells papers.

But, Coach, spare us the dramatics by berating the journalists. Those guys sitting there with pocket protectors and cassette recorders didn't quit on the field Saturday. YOUR MEN DID. So, enough with the tongue lashing of NBC 13. Lay off the power smash on Fox 6. Let's make the difference in the locker room and on the field. All the yelling and berating doesn't mean a thing if those guys don't play up to expectations.

I don't buy into fear. Results are the only thing I'm concerned with.

Just in case you forogt:
1 BCS National Championship
2 SEC Titles
in five years at LSU which when he came in had to rebuild an utter mess as well from a "culture" standpoint.

So I would think when he's all "rough and tough" with the media he probably is worse with the team. Especially after getting emarrassed like he did Saturday.

Let's not throw out the baby with the dirty bath water. ;)

A bit off topic, but we've all presumed that LSU was in worse shape when Saban took over than we were when Saban took over. After these past couple of games I'm beginning to think that that isn't the case. We may be a bigger, utter mess than LSU was.

Well, it certainly seems like he got your attention. For what it's worth, I think Mike Shula proved that the "kinder, gentler" way of dealing with people doesn't effect any positive change. People often need to be told exactly what to do and how to do it in order to "get it right." Then and only then are most people able to do things well and be able to teach others, in turn, how to do it well. I don't think he wants people to "fear" him, but it's interesting you would take it that way. I think he wants people to understand that it truly will be his way or the highway. "Get on board or get off," so to speak. He has shown that his way will eventually lead to good results, none of us know anything about running a college football program, so why don't we all try to stop molding him into what we want him to be and let him do his job the best way he knows how?

This is probably a big reason that we have lost the past two weeks. Without a little "fear", you're not going to get results. You sort of contradicted yourself on that one. At this point in the program, with a new coach, that's probably the main way to get results.

i think we all know who the problem children are without a whole lot of guess work. as coach hinted i think it would be best for the team to sit those players down because they are sucking the life out of the team. nothing would tickle me more than to win a game without those who think they are indespensible.

CNS said he expects Coffee and Upchurch along with Grant will contribute at RB.

Not questioning anyone but just trying to figure it out....
I've had a hard time understanding the RB rotation and a few others this year. In regards to Upchurch, we'll see if him a few plays and he seems to do fairly well and then we may not see him for a couple of weeks. I know he was a little beat up a few games ago, but he was in on special teams on Sat. Same for McLain, who's just disappeared after looking like an all SEC frosh to start the year.
What do you guys think it is? Are they just using certain guys depending on the team we're facing or our gameplan. Or is it a matter of it being a week to week analysis by the coaches on who has done what it takes in practice to get on the field. And if that's the case, how can we ever understand such inconsistency each week? I know this is probably what's killing CNS. And I'm not calling these 2 out, these just to me are the more notable examples.

This is the money quote from Saban today:

"The biggest thing that I see is, this team did not have the perserverance to finish the season the way it needed to be finished. And something happened after the LSU game relative to commitment and how they wanted to finish, with still a lot on the line and a lot to be accomplished. Now that needs to change. And moving forward in the future of this program it needs to change, too. "

OK, I love the guy and like the "calling out" and what it intimates for the future--seems totally warranted. But, even tho I know he's not a politician or anything, surely the 911 and Pearl Harbor analogies are over the top. Reminds me of "The Junction Boys" when a vet called CPB out for referring to a football game as a war. Flame away.
On the positive side, loved how he said something to the effect that either these guys are gonna do the right thing to win, or he will find the ones that will.

Another thought: If the picture re character/lack of leadership/lack of motivation that Saban painted is as bad it sounds, hard to see how we have any chance this weekend. Maybe this post belongs in the prediction thread, but the press conference certainly made me more pessimistic.

I don't see how it could make you pessimistic. It made me more optimistic because he KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT and WHO the problems are and he point blank said it will get fixed. Look, we're not going to turn this program around by winning at Auburn this weekend. This program's success isn't hinging off this one game this weekend. This program's success is hinging off of changing the worth ethic, culture, mindset of the players here and the players coming in.

You can tell he's about to drop the hammer on the ones that "don't get it". He all but said it in the PC. That's a good thing.

Sure hope you're right. I guess my impression was that it would take into the off-season to clear things out.

if we've got carcinogens on this team (cancer causing agents) and I think we do, then it is Coach Saban's responsibility to cut them out...sit them on the bench or better yet don't even take them to the barn Saturday...leave them in t-town...
