Maybe this will cause the league's coaches to be a little more civil. Probably not.

NEW YORK -- Southeastern Conference coaches will face stiffer penalties from now on for complaining about officiating in the media.

Commissioner Mike Slive told The Associated Press in a phone interview Friday that coaches who violate the conferences' ethics rules against criticizing officials in public will face a fine or suspension instead of receiving public reprimands when they first act up.

"It became clear to me after last week that I was no longer interested in reprimands and the conference athletic directors and university presidents unanimously agreed," said Slive, in his eighth season as the head of the SEC.

We can just call it the "Kiffin Whine Rule".

Slive can cry me a river....Heaven forbid coaches actually take a stand about the officiatin...Slive is a (word that would probably get me suspended  )

Are you serious? You think all this public butchering of the officials is a good practice? The SEC already has channels to go through to communicate perceived discrepencies. It doesn't need public comments by sore loser coaches. They have already gone to unprecedented lengths (suspensions) to send the message that they know there are problems.

Lame Kiffin would be well served to open a rulebook. Roll Tide!!!!!

Kiffin was wrong about getting a re-kick, but this goes alot further than that...However Mullen and Petrino's comments were justified...Richt would have justified had he said something...The best conference in the league deserves better, and if the only way to bring attention to it is for coaches to speak out, then so be it...Slive is a power hungry (word I was going to use earlier, but wont), who is trying to cover his own rear end...He knows the coaches are right, but he's getting his panties in a wad that people are actually calling him on it...He's trying to rest on his laurels of getting this new TV deal, but with the quality of the league, anybody could have negotiated that...he needs to learn this insn't C-USA, and bad moves in this league actually get attention

JMO, of course

The average fool in the stands or on the internet can get away with criticizing the refs. If the players get away with it in a game then the official doesn't understand the extent of his power. If a coach gets away with it in the press then the league is not doing a very good job of backing it's own officials.

In hindsight, public admonishment and publicized suspensions was exactly the wrong way to handle perceived shortcomings in performance by officials.

However, if you're a coach and all you have to do is say "no comment" and yet you can't keep your mouth closed; I'd get downright draconian if I were the commissioner.

Those channels have not worked...Those channels have been in place, and officiating has gotten worse, not better

I agree, and what caused that suspension??? It was public outcry (not only by fans, but by Petrino) that started that ball rolling. Had nobody said anything, and it was only handled "through the proper channels," nothing would have happened to those refs

I would only say there is a very distinct difference in Petrino's & Richts gripes regarding the refs which were so blatant, most agreed they changed the outcome or impacted those games.

Kiffins tantrums and smart-alek remarks about the officiating were not only wrong but they did not impact the game & really were not worthy of the attention they received.
But that was the point. All he wanted was the attention, because he lost the game, and I guess he was willing to look stupid to get it. It worked.
Just my thoughts.

Roll Tide.:BigA:

The problem is, Kiffin in Orgeron escalated things from merely complaining about individual calls to out and out claiming a conspiracy/favoritism.

The idea that instant-replay, or younger referees, or more money will solve the problem of mistakes and missed calls by referees is patently absurd. Referees make mistakes. They always have and they always will. That's why we boo them.

There may be a way forward for raising the level of performance marginally, but sanctioning officials publicly is a guaranteed FAIL. The immediate result of that policy is that officials leave the flag in their pockets except for procedure penalties. Things like flagrant pass interference, holding, even play clock infractions tend to go un-noticed.

I'm expecting a relatively flag free event between UT and USC given that both those coaches have zero goodwill in the officiating pool.

Kiffin deserves to have his rocky top sanctioned for complaining without having a legitimate case to cite.

Mullin's quarterback cost him the touchdown against Florida, not the replay official.

I think that the commissioner should reverse his decision to suspend the crew he suspended after the LSU-Arky game. It was just the wrong way to handle it.

There is an ENORMOUS difference between Petrino's/Mullen's complaints and little Kiff's.

Petrino and Mullen had specific and legitimate complaints. The calls they complained about were OBVIOUSLY incorrect calls and are right there on the film.

Kiffin's complaint wasn't even legitimate because, HAD HE KNOWN THE RULE OR EVEN BOTHERED TO RESEARCH IT HE WOULD HAVE DISCOVERED THAT, even if a flag had been thrown, UT would NOT get a re-kick and Bama would have taken a knee.

Kiffin took it a step further with his ridiculous "magical flag" and "Alabama and Florida live on" comments.

It's one thing to complain about a specific, obviously incorrect call. It's a whole different animal to not even know the rules and complain about phantom calls that could have happened and then suggest a league-wide conspiracy based on that.

Tennessee, you're usually one of the most level-headed rival posters on here. Did you fall down in front of the Lame Train and get the sense knocked out of you?

Don't blame him, he had to do SOMETHING. But I whole heartedly disagree with those who contend that the officiating in the SEC is as good as it could or should be. IF we are really going to lay claim to having the best conference in the country, we need to improve this area. The players, schools, coaches and fans deserve better. The answer is not getting the coaches to quit talking about it in press conferences, the answer is better officiating. It's not like this is a new problem. I believe that the current head of officials in the one who failed to flag Arkansas for 12 men on the field against us on a season-changing play. I watch a lot of football. Other conferences have better officiating than we do.
