Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
Rewatching Auburn again. One problem we have is we recruit outside linbacker types
like Turner and Anderson. They are great when we are in our 3-4 defense cause
matched up more vs TE's. We have been running a lot of 4-2-5 where they are undersized
at DE and then we roll down a smallish DB over the TE. Play one defense or the other
and recruit those types of players. Some of the alignments up front make no sense.
Continually outnumbered on the edges.
Did you notice all the bad angles the players took to the running back that allowed plays that the RB should have been tackled behind the LOS or for a minimal gain, to turn into a 6-8 yard gain? It was all.game.long.

Our inside linebackers have been out of position and taking poor angles for the past three years. And our tackling as atrocious as well on Saturday.

And who coaches our ILB’s ? Pistol Pete Gol*ing

One thing that really confuses me concerning our defense is this: CNS is standing right there next to golding on the sidelines. As we've seen in the past, assistants would be getting ripped if he had issues with calls. You don't see that currently with our defensive personnel.
That speaks volumes.

Watch in the SEC Championship game Kirby will have an extra defender on the edge
so when Daniel's pulls the ball someone will wreck him. You adjust your scheme to take
away what the opponents offense does best. Just like spying the qb. Like I said earlier
our defensive staff doesn't do this.

Kirby will make Daniels look like a high school QB. That’s because he has good coaches on the defensive side. Bama does not.

This is correct, G*ld*ng isn't going anywhere and isn't getting "demoted". My guess is, he is Saban's DC until he retires. If he hasn't fired him by now, he's sold on keeping him for the duration.
Yet as great as he is, there’s absolutely no chance he will be stolen away from us.

We need to read this multiple times. This is the crux of our issue on defense. Saban is the bigger problem here. Hence, why he takes up for Pete publicly. He knows he is not given Pete a free hand to design the defense and call it accordingly.

The problems on defense go beyond CPG and won't be fixed by just firing CPG or any of the position coaches either. Coach will have to make changes too.

If he changes DCs and depending on who he brings in, will tell us alot about how much longer Saban intends to coach. If he retains CPG and most of the position coaches, he only has 2-3 more years left. If it's someone with more pedigree, then it's probably 3-5 more years.

Im not taking up for CPG per se, but we need realize CPG may be a prodigy but if the prodigy is required to play within the existing structure.

How many of us had bosses that didn't realize our potential given resistance to change?

Nor did we use a spy in the LSU game with Daniels.
I know in the past CNS had stated he “didn’t like using a spy on the QB because it pulled a player out of the scheme”.
His point was “if we execute our defensive
reads/assignments correctly, the QB doesn’t break contain”. Problem is that we rarely execute correctly and the quarterback does break contain.

It is absolutely maddening

Ummm....

Golding is basically the only defensive coordinator out of like, 7 or 8? That hasn't had a top ten scoring defense running Saban's scheme (at Georgia or Alabama).

The problem is clearly Golding. The defense was #1 two consecutive years before Golding took over and wrecked it. Is the argument really that from one season to the next Saban suddenly became the problem and Golding has no role in it?

One thing changed, Golding got hired!

Some people don't seem to appreciate the role Golding had in 2018 as well. He wasn't just co-DC, he took over for calling the defense as well. I don't know exactly when, but since we know he took over that means he was calling plays at the end.

Well... the defense actually did progressively worse in each of the last 6 games! That's really a remarkable achievement, but it's also a remarkable achievement to take over a defense that hadn't been outside of the top 10 once in a decade and managing to stay outside of the top 10 for your entire tenure.

Resistance to change? Kirby is literally hiring anyone else who worked under Saban (even graduate assistants) in any capacity and and having top ten defenses. If we're going to make comparisons here, it's like a new chef taking over at the best restaurant in the world, and turning it into a mediocre restaurant. But, when things so south you blame the existing menu at the best restaurant in the world, instead of the person who took over and clearly isn't doing a good job.

Saban gave Golding the best defensive scheme in college football. It Golding can't manage with that, that's only due to his incompetence.

I have been saying for 3 or 4 years that Saban needs to scrap his defense and go out and get a DC with a proven track record and let him implement his defense. Much in the same way he relinquished the reigns of the offense years ago. He realized it was time to go away from the ground and pound and open up the O. I truly hope he can do the same for the D. Being self aware of your deficiencies is a very difficult thing for anyone, but especially for someone so successful at what they do. But I hope he can see it is time for change......not just in the defensive coaches(especially Petey) but also the philosophy and scheme.

Yeah, if only Saban's scheme worked the past 3 or 4 years.

Wait, Georgia has had the #1 scoring defense the past two seasons running that scheme? You know, just like Alabama had the two years before Golding was hired? C'mon people, Golding was at Alabama the past 3 or 4 years. That's the reason you started doubting the defense, because Golding sucks. You didn't want to change it two years before he was hired when it was #1 now did you?

It's not rocket science. The Georgia defense is what Saban used to have at Alabama before Golding took over. There's nothing wrong with the defense!

Over the past few seasons there have been numerous poor defensive game plans.
Something is definitely missing. That is on the entire defensive staff and Saban for
signing off on it. It is time to turn the reins over to a new DC and bring in a new system.

I've not watched UGA enough to know but is Kirby still running Saban's D or has he modified it over the years? I suspect it's the latter, meaning the basic D might be similar, but the tweaks have made it more effective.

BowlCut is obviously a great defensive mind, so there's little chance (in my mind) that Kirby hasn't modified the D considerably. The Venn diagram of the two defenses would certainly have a ton of overlap but the parts that differ may be considerable.

Not suggesting this isn't a Gol*ing issue, in fact, I think the progression Bama lacks wrt stopping modern defenses is due to Gol*ing. Offenses have changed a lot since BowlCut left for UGA.

Bob is gone for sure but it looks like Golding isn’t going anywhere. It’s a shame too bc there are several quality d coordinators out there we could get. Wonder if a position coach or two will leave.
