Simeon Castille Update:

Did you read the post I quoted before jumping the gun there? I was railing against a guy who said "I hate cops".

You have a problem with my response towards someone wishing ill will towards all police?

If not, try reading in context before jumping the gun.

I appreciate that, but you've been defending this cop for since yesterday and frankly your tone in this email is similar to your overall tone regarding this situation. I'm sorry this was taken out of context, but you do seem like someone who doesn't give the benefit of the doubt to CS in this situation.

What really struck me as odd it how SC could be heard over 5 vehicles and 200 people from a block away, but the traffic was backed up for 3 blocks, seems sort of contradictory to me.

It seems as though most of the people posting on this topic are giving the benifit of the doubt to SC including you. What if ALL of the information has not been made public? What if the officers on scene did in fact talk to and take written statement from witnesses and take statements from the people in the SUV. As i posted earlier the report released to the media is an Intradepartmental not an Offence report. It does not contain all the facts of the incident nor are any of the other officers reports posted. If they were the police officer may be due the benifit of the doubt.

You guys should listen to the archives of Finebaum's show from yesterday.

I think most of the callers want to see Castille suspended. One guy on Hour 1 was saying that Saban hasn't established enough discipline at Alabama yet because of all the arrests this year. He didn't sound too happy with Saban about this whole mess with the players this year.

Don't forget that the reverse is true too. I can't stand when people cast infallibility on a person because they belong to an organization. Every man should be judged on his own merits and not on his profession. I don't know the officer or the witnesses and I'm not willing to judge one person as being more trustworthy than the other.

Yeah...I know that, my response as well as crimsonaudios response came to a guy saying he hates "cops". Look, I've been the victim of uncalled for police brutality. I was a thug at one point I've met good cops, bad cops and some that are in the middle. I know that we are all just people and your profession does not make you a good, or bad person. it's what's inside of you. But I guarrantee you my friend...cops that choose to abuse their authority ARE in the minority...but they get the press...you don't hear about the guys like the one that helped pull me off the streets and out of a life of crime and drugs. Those guys don't make the newspaper. But you still have people out making foolish statements like "I hate cops" not even thinking about the majority of police officers who would give their lives to protect yours.

Telling most of the members of this board to listen to Finebaum is akin to asking us to put a gun to our heads and pull the trigger. Probably won't happen.

Great post!

Fine, show me one post where I blamed SC and 'defended this cop'. One post.

Since when is a 21 year old a kid? When you're 21 you have many privileges, rights, and responsibilities. Simeon's not a kid. Let's not excuse his actions by referring to him as such.

I personally do not excuse his actions, but an arrest was not warranted in this situation.

I used a guide while on patrol near Birmingham (Jefferson/Shelby Co. area) in the early eighties:

#1 Were drugs, #2 alcohol, or #3 violence involved. All serious.

If Yes - Arrest
If No - No Arrest, but a report was made for record purposes. A majority of police departments in this country do not have the time to book misdemeanors with the myriad of felonies that consume our courts, Jails, and Prisons. Only in a perfect world. Well that ain't happening.

Again he should have been written up and counseled on scene, but released on his own recognizance.

Some young adults take longer to mature than others. Sad to say Castille appears to be one of those slow to adulthood. :p_sad:

I grew up in Gadsden and had several "discussions" with cops. Several times my friends and I (grad in '80) had our beer "confiscated" and sent home with the non drinking one driving. Under age drinkers using a designated driver......we were ahead of our time.

One of my discussions was for almost getting in a fight at the mall, went down town for disorderly conduct. Never raised my voice just happened to use "GD" at someone. All depends on the cop, the circumstances, and probably how crappy his shift has been to that point.

Glad I didn't live in your beat. As long as the thief wasn't drunk, on dope or beat anyone up.... look free TV's.:biggrin2:

I just can't see why an arrest should come from a situation where there was ZERO criminal intent and NO ONE was harmed. I don't see how the officer's actions and SC's arrest have in any way served to benefit society and after all isn't that the purpose?

By the officer's own admission SC was very respectful once detained. I see this arrest as a huge disservice to law-abiding citizens and an unnecessary tax burden.

It's easy to get carried away when blowing off steam and end up toeing the legal line which is why police are supposed to issue warnings. This isn't a case of someone willingly breaking the law or defying the legal system.

What we really need is a task force to arrest the people ripping the tags off of mattresses.

I'm sure that no one that has been arrested for DUI had any criminal intent either. Is it Ok to drive drunk as long as no one is harmer? My point is this, you don't have to be drunk, on dope or injure some one to violate the law. Some laws are on the books to protect people from becoming injured. Much like DC. If you engage in conduct that MAY prevoke a fight it's against the law. Surely you dont believe a fight must occur before the law is broken.

WVUA just showed a bit of Coach Saban's post practice presser.

Coach said that poor judgment is not something that can be tolerated in this organization, but that Simeon is a fine citizen, fine player, really cares about doing things right, and in no way do we think that the police were not doing their job, we have respect for the police and for the job that they have to do. This is not the kind of behavior that we want in the program and I'm hopeful that we don't have these kind of incidents in the future. He also said that there are things that Simeon will have some things he will need to take care of.

No, I just shot them. ;)

I completely agree with you. My statement was strictly referring to the original member's notion that a 21 year old is a kid. Such an idea seemed to be an attempt to excuse the actions of someone who knows better.

The day Coach Saban starts listening to Finebaum or his listeners is the day he needs to be fired. Stop stirring the pot.

DUI doesn't need any intent (as in how drunk did you "intend" to drive) because we have a hard and fast BAC level to check for. It's completely objective. .08% is the law and if you're above it you've broken the law. This arrest was completely subjective. How loud is too loud? How much can you horse around with your friends until it seems "too real"? Who's in danger of being hurt if I say "f-u" to one of my friends? These are all subjective questions.

That's why I bring up the intent. In my opinion the cop made a mistake and should have backed down once he realized it was just a case of a guy who maybe got carried away goofing off and not a case of conduct that MAY have provoked a fight.
