Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times after a government meeting and is in a life-threatening condition, according to a statement posted on his official Facebook page.

The Slovak leader was transported to hospital in Banska Bystrica, according to the statement.

The town of Handlova, where the shooting took place, is about two hours’ drive from the capital Bratislava. The government was in the town for an off-site meeting.

Several shots were fired at Fico, according to TASR news agency. Slovakia’s emergency medical service said it sent a helicopter ambulance to the scene.

So this was a pro-Russian guy right?
The Czech President Miloš Zeman was the pro-Russian guy. The president in most parliamentary systems is a figurehead.
On the other hand:

During the 2023 parliamentary election, Fico ran on a campaign to cease military support to Ukraine during its invasion by Russia.[5][6] His party Direction – Social Democracy (Smer), won the most votes in the election, with 22.95% of the vote and winning 42 seats.[7] Fico formed a coalition with Voice – Social Democracy (Hlas) and the Slovak National Party, and began his fourth term as prime minister on 25 October. The Fico government has flatly refused to join a Czech-led coalition of about 20 states in procuring military aid for Ukraine.[8]

So this looks like an opponent of aid to Ukraine, as opposed to pro-Russia (although he might be pro-Russia as well).
Slovakia lost the province of Transkarpatia to Ukraine after the Second World War, so maybe that is why he has a bee in his bonnet in regard to Ukraine.

Makes you wonder where the SBU or FSB was. Could see either side doing this for reasons.
