The Tide starter struck out a career-high 11 batters in his 8.0 innings of work

5/1/2021

TUSCALOOSA, AL – Dylan Smith was dominant in his start on Saturday, leading Alabama baseball to a 5-2 win over Missouri. The victory clinched the series for UA and moved the Crimson Tide to 27-15 overall with a 10-10 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

Smith (1-5) has been impressive all season but was able to pick up his first win thanks to his best start to date. The right-hander worked a career-high tying 8.0 innings of two-run baseball, allowing just six hits and issuing zero walks while striking out a career-best 11 in the effort. Landon Green followed, making his second appearance in as many days and punching out two as part of a scoreless ninth for his second save.

The Tide bats posted five runs in support of Smith. Alabama's offense was led by Drew Williamson, Jackson Tate and Jim Jarvis. The 6-7 hole hitters in Williamson and Tate each contributed three hits, including one double apiece. Williamson finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs while Tate wrapped up his day 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Jarvis finished 1-for-4 with a triple, one run and a team-high two RBI from the eight-hole.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Dylan (Smith) is the story of the game. Number one, he pitched great – you go 11 punchouts and no walks against an SEC team in 8.0 innings with two runs allowed, that's just huge. Dylan's had a great season. He's pitched really well every time out and given us a very good chance to win every time out. I'm excited for him to get rewarded with a win today."

How It Happened
  • T2 | The Tigers put a man in scoring position with a one-out double. The next batter singled to left to score the game's first run. (1-0, Missouri)
  • B3 | William Hamiter sent the first pitch he saw into the visitor's bullpen for a solo home run to even things at one apiece. (1-1)
  • B4 | Drew Williamson doubled to start the inning with Jackson Tate singling to left in the next at-bat to put runners on the corners. Tate stole second to place the pair in scoring position for Jim Jarvis. The Tide shortstop proceeded to give the Tide the lead with a 4-3 groundout that allowed Williamson to cross. (2-1, Alabama)
  • B5 | UA added one more on an RBI-single from Tate. The single crossed Hamiter, who started off the fifth with a walk, moved to second on a single and advanced to third on a passed ball. (3-1, Alabama)
  • T7 | Missouri cut the lead to one when Brandt Belk stole home. (3-2, Alabama)
  • B8 | The Crimson Tide added a pair of insurance runs to put the game out of reach. Williamson led things off with a single and came around one-out later thanks to an RBI-triple from Jarvis. Caden Rose followed him with a sacrifice fly to right to add a second run in the inning. (5-2, Alabama)
