The Tide starter limited the Cougars to one run across his career-long 7.0 innings of work

Despite a strong outing from starter Dylan Smith, Alabama baseball was unable to secure the win against the College of Charleston in a 1-0 ballgame on Saturday afternoon at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. The loss moves the 23rd-ranked Crimson Tide to 9-2 on the season.

Smith (0-1) was impressive in his start for a second straight week but did not get the win once again. The junior improved upon his career-best totals from a week ago to set new career-high marks for innings and strikeouts. Smith allowed just one run on four hits with no walks and 10 punchouts but his offense was unable to provide the necessary assistance.

The Tide was shut out for the first time this season but had opportunities to score in the game. Alabama placed a runner in scoring position in five separate innings but stranded a season-high tying 13 runners on the day. The Crimson Tide's best chance came with one down and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but a lineout and a strikeout ended the Tide threat.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"Tough loss today. Dylan Smith was outstanding and gave us a great chance to win. With the wind blowing in, we just couldn't keep the ball out of the air enough consistently. We had plenty of chances. We continue to be incredibly inefficient offensively, and until we improve situationally, we are going to have difficulty scoring when we don't hit home runs."

How It Happened
  • B2 | The Cougars hit a solo home run to gain the advantage. (1-0, College of Charleston)
Postgame Notes
  • Dylan Smith set a new Alabama season-high and his own career-high for innings pitched with 7.0. His previous career-best mark of 5.2 innings came last weekend against Wright State in game two of the doubleheader on Feb. 27.
  • Smith set a career-high total for strikeouts with 10 in today's contest. The 10 Ks are the most by an Alabama pitcher since Connor Prielipp punched out 11 last season against Lipscomb on March 6. Smith's previous career-best strikeout total was seven last weekend against the Raiders.
  • Sam Praytor finished 1-for-3 on the day to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Across that time, the Tide catcher is batting .258 (8-31) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI, four runs and six walks.
  • Jim Jarvis extended his hitting streak to seven games thanks to his 2-for-3 effort. The sophomore is batting .364 (8-22) with a double, two RBI, three runs, two walks, a pair of hit-by-pitch and a stolen base across the current streak.
  • Peyton Wilson's hitting streak came to an end at five games. During the streak, Wilson batted .350 (7-20) with three home runs, six RBI, six runs, three walks and a pair of stolen bases.
Alabama and the College of Charleston will meet on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. CT to decide the series. The Crimson Tide calls on left-hander Antoine Jean while the Cougars counter with Caswell Smith, a righty. Game three of the series will be streamed live through FloSports.
