Penn State looked solid in the 2nd half against Youngstown State. The opening kickoff return of the 3rd qtr really broke the Penguins' backs. Bolden looked pretty solid for a 1st time starter with his only INT really caused by a reciever falling down. A big negative for me was PSU's O-line. They were very unimpressive as I expected them to push Youngstown State's D around a bit more and open up holes for Royster.

The PSU D pretty much stayed vanilla in a base formation the whole game. I can only suspect that because when they went nickel early on YGST burned them for an 80 yard TD. If they try and stay with 3 LB's the entire game against Bama they could be in trouble, because as good as PSU's LB units are, linebackers can't cover wideouts for an entire game.

Alabama was almost flawless in its win over SJSU. Outside of 2 busted plays given up, one from poor angles and bad tackling on a long run and the other a blown assignment on the pass, the Tide's D did what you wanted. They stuffed the run and shut down the pass as they should against a team like SJSU.

The Tide offense pretty much move the ball at will through the air or on the ground. The spartans had zero answers for any of the running backs Alabama ran at them. We already knew what Trent Richardson was cable of, but you also saw flashes of speed and brilliance from Lacy and Goode, despite the early Lacy fumble.

Solid playing time for 2 Bama QBS. The passing game looked good and was highlighted with a spectacular Julio Jones over the shoulder one handed TD grab.

Also was impressed by Alabama's special teams play. Solid kickoff covereage, excellent kicking and punting by two first time starters.

Of course, how good was SJSU? Either way, Alabama did what they had to. Bring on the Nittany Lions.

Too early to tell. Neither played a good team.

It should be a good game.

There aren't too many certainties I can say about the Penn St. game this week but I think I know of one. Penn St. better get ready for the biggest wave of power running they're gonna see all year. Our running game as hard as it for me to believe is better this year. Our OL pound people into submission. Penn St. better bring their big boy pants Saturday night.

I believe Penn State is replacing most of their linebackers. They are going to get a stiff test on Saturday.

I think this will be a good contest, but I expect the Bama D to surprise a lot of people. Let's remember, this is a true freshman QB, coming into our house, against an SEC defense. Not to mention our offense is better than last year, no question. Should be a good one, and I can't wait for Saturday!

I live in Nashville and the guys on the sports show Friday morning were discussing JoePa coming to the south next week. Then Frank Wycheck said of Penn State "they're gonna get rolled next week", and the other guy agreed and said this could be ugly for State. These guys don't just love the Tide either. Just thought that was interesting since neither team had not played a game yet.

Wycheck doesn't much like Saban, but he does know and respect good football when he sees it, and he was pretty impressed with that Training Days stuff. I feel like PS had better have the big boy pants on too, this is not going to be like a LSU in the mud bowl game. The speed we have is going to shock and awe them, IMO.

While I agree with most of the comments above, I have to add that IMO we shouldn't prejudge next weeks game against PSU by what we saw our guys do yesterday against lowly SJSU. We don't know that Penn State gave all they had against a team from a FCS school. All we do know is that PSU put on a rout against them while starting their freshman QB.
If I know JoePa, his team didn't put on their best showing, and for a reason. They will be watching film from our game, and he knows we'll be doing the same on theirs.
I think he'll pull out all the stops, and the Lions will give us all we want. I'm just as sure we're going to take it to them for the whole 60 minutes. I just think it will be a much closer game than some on here think.

PSU was Jekyll and Hyde in its game. They were trailing a 1-AA team with 2 minutes left in the first half. They got the TD at the end of the half and the KO return sealed it, and Youngstown might've given up after that, but I still don't know what PSU will bring b/c they were vanilla and the game was a tale of two halves. PSU is still an unknown quantity (they could've just been looking to us in that first half), so I still think Bama wins by 10-14.

Paterno's teams play hard nosed football and everybody plays Alabama tough, as Bama is the standard. Expect no less from PS next week!
They got the fever and we got the cure!! Roll Tide!!

I don't think, offensively, their game plan will be terribly different; this is a true freshman qb we're talking about. He's not gonna have a laundry list of sets and packages to work from. There haven't been many true frosh qb's, in my memory, who could handle that scenario at all, much less against one of the best, if not the best, defense in the country.
Right now? Bama wins by 17. I will probably update that by Friday.

That's true but we went deep into the depth chart. And we didn't wait til midway through the 4th to do it. I thought even I was gonna get to play there for a while.

Ordinarily, I'd think Saban's D could mess with the mind of a true freshman QB, and bait him into mistakes.

But we have such an inexperienced secondary, that might not be as much of an option as it would have been in 2009.

Should be an interesting matchup. Still look for us to win, but PSU isn't SJSU, and it won't be easy, especially if we can't muster a pass rush. We didn't miss Dareus' run stopping so much yesterday, but we sure missed his pass rush.

it didn't look like we attempted to pass rush much last night. seems like we kept a pretty basic defense

SJsu Used alot of quick slants and outs, thay got the ball out as fast as thay could.that's why we din't have much of a pass rush.

What kind of a back is Royster ? Does anyone know his height, weight and 40 ? Does he try to run over defenders or juke and spin ? Is he a receiving threat out of the backfield ? How much of their offense is on his shoulders ?

About 6'1" 220ish, not a "burner" by any means but he's a good all-around back. He's easily their best offensive player IMHO but for whatever reason he didn't get very many touches in their opener (I suppose they were trying to keep him fresh for us). I'm sure our gameplan will be to shut him and their run game down and put the game on their freshman QBs shoulders. If we do I believe it could be a long night for their offense, even with our inexperienced secondary.
