Crimson Tide drubs Kentucky, 8-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Kentucky softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to fourth-ranked Alabama (34-1, 14-1 Southeastern Conference) Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Softball Complex.

Alabama jumped out in front in the bottom of the first inning, scoring four runs on six hits and batted around. The Crimson Tide banged out three consecutive singles and a double sandwiched around a sacrifice fly to left field to score three of the runs and followed with two more singles to add the fourth run of the inning.

Bama added another run in the second inning on two consecutive singles to push the lead to 5-0. UK junior Jen Howland replaced Marr in the second inning and held Alabama scoreless until the fifth inning. The Crimson Tide added three runs in the bottom of the fifth on four singles to end the game at the end of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule. It was only the fourth time in the 2001 campaign that the Cats have been shut out.

Tide starting pitcher Shelley Laird shut the Cats down on three singles through five innings and kept her record perfect on the season at 21-0.

UK hurler Morgan Marr suffered the loss for the Wildcats and fell to 11-9 on the season.

The Cats (17-21, 4-9 SEC) continue SEC play as they travel to Starkville, Miss., Saturday, April 7, for an afternoon doubleheader against the Bulldogs to begin a three-game series.
