Some comments from the NFL combines,

"Vanderbilt WR Earl Bennett measured 5'11/209 at the Combine weigh-in. This is shorter than expected."

"Arkansas RB Felix Jones measured 5'10/207 at the NFL Combine weigh-in. Jones was listed at 6'0/207 in college, so this is somewhat disappointing."

I expect both players to do well in the NFL but whats the motivation in listing these players at a greater height than they are? Does it help you win? I think not, Does it help draft status? These guys in the NFL take nobodys word for anything, so its not going to help there. I saw this a LOT in high school, but you would think a league like the SEC this wouldn't be so common.

I would look at the rosters for the NFL teams that pick them up next year. Guaranteed Jones will be listed at 6'0. Bank on it.

When I was in college, if you were under 6', they'd add 2 inches to you're barefoot height. 5'9" would end up being 5'11"

I never got my name on the roster, so I never got to tell that lie, but I sure used to dream.

Looks like that still goes on.

I think it's like the old fisherman tales. I have always been 5'11" everytime I've ever checked, but I don't know how many times I've had guys over the years say, "I'm 6'1" or 6'2" and I'm looking at them eye to eye.:conf2:

I am a legitimate 6'2 (I used to be 6'3 but due to a compression fracture I am now 6'2), but I can be as tall as 6'5 or as short as 5'11 depending on which gas station I am leaving. ;)

D.J. Hall was listed as 6'3 at Alabama, and now most of the measurements you see for him are only 6'1 or 6'2. He measured in at just under 6'2 at the combine, but some are rounding up.

Probably just to make the player feel better about themselves or to make the opposition a little more nervous.

As for the Combine, they are going to measure every square inch of your body before you leave Indy and critique your every flaw.

It happens with the coaches too. I got to shake Coach Saban's hand at a high school game, I'm 5'9" and he looked a little shorter than me, even though he claims 5'9"'. Saw Coach Miles at the bookstore, and he's supposed to be 6'1", no way, probably 5'11"

Maybe they wear platform cleats on the field.

I have a similar problem . Those things are pitiful when it comes to accuracy . I fall into the 5-11 to 6-3 range when I'm just a shade under 6-1 .

On the listings , it used to work both ways . Stallings was the last college coach I knew of who would downsize some of his players . When I used to pbp/color high school ball there was a coach here in town who was a great source of intertainment when it came to listings . If an OL was around 240 he'd list him as being 200 . Some of the players who were about 180 would be listed at 150 . Funny old-school psychological stuff .

All these guys that are nervous about their physique just need to look at Tom Brady's photos and video from the combines.:biggrin::biggrin:

It's not just football. My sister played volleyball at Southern Miss last year. She is around 5'2" with tennis shoes on. I know, she's short for a volleyball player. However, when I picked up the program for the first game, I had a nice laugh when I saw her listed as 5'4".

Yeah, Brady wasn't exactly Manning or JaMarcus like coming out of Meechigan.

BTW, I caught Marcus McNeil talking about his Combine experience in the BodPod. It's that egg looking machine that players crawl into and measures body fat. He said it was a waste of time on him because he was 100% body fat. Pretty funny for a Barn grad.

Correct. I think we listed Brodie at something like 6'3", and I stood beside him on the concrete sidewalk beside the practice field one day a few years ago. I was in normal flat sole shoes and he was in cleats, and my 6"2" had him by more than a hair (according to a bystander). I believe he might be slightly over 6' in regular shoes (without the cleats on concrete).

This is a normal habit in sports. It makes your arsenal look bigger and badder on paper, and gets the fans oohing and ahhing.
