Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

Surely you aren't suggesting that the entire project would be completed in less than a year. That would be great if they could start by Dec. 2008 and finish before August 2009, but I doubt they can get it done that quickly. We shall see.
You're right. Sorry - it would be up for the 2010 season, and under construction during the 2009 season. Good catch on my bad math.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

If the Super 6 were in BDS, I might be inclined to actually go watch the games. Legion Field (and that whole area) scares the crap out of me.

I wouldn't mind seeing them rotate the Super 6 between BDS and Jerrdan Hair every other year. Until the Troy folks start whining...of course.
I've been attending football games at Legion Field for the past 30+ years and have never had any problems or known anyone who did.

I went to last year's 6A final between Prattville and Hoover and from a security standpoint it was just fine. But that was where "fine" ended and sorry began.

As far as concession availability, well that was poorly planned to say the least as it was nearly impossible to buy food or drinks in less than 30 minutes. The AHSAA or city of B'ham, or whoever, missed out on a great opportunity to make some money by having more food vendors available but what else is new?? When attending the Carver-Hoover game (second part of a double header-which was a logistic nightmare) at Lawson field this past fall, they were sold out of hot dogs and popcorn before kickoff and out of pretty much everything else by halftime. But there were lots of Police in the stadium..just not any directing traffic..

Back to Legion Field,

If you used to attend Bama games games there you will find that the bathrooms smell pretty much the same as they did 20 years ago even though they appeared fairly clean..Looks can be deceiving.

It would behoove the AHSAA to seriously consider moving the games to the Hoover Met at least until they work out some plan to rotate between BDS and JHS.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

You know as far as Championship rotation goes, AHSAA could do it sort of like the MLB. Hold an All-Star game between the North-South regions the way playoffs are split, and the winner of that game gets the home field for that classification. BDS being the North home field and JHS being the South home field.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

My first post here! My brother-in-law's cousin, who I know personally, works for the construction comp. that did the NEZ expansion. The Fri. before the LSU game, she told me that on the Wed. of that week she was told she was to be the project manager of the new expansion. She said that the construction was to begin after next football season. So that would mean after the Auburn game of next year. She also said that it would be a mirror image of the NEZ, including another Zone. Zone II, is what she said, maybe a different name... She also said seating would hopefully be close to 107,000. ROLL FREAKIN' TIDE She was in the process of trying to compile a list of contractors for the project.:BigA:

There's no way in h*** that the stadium will seat 107,000 unless they go to Tennessee size seats.

The figure I have heard is a bit over 104,000 but then again, if UA's engineers decide to use "General Neyland's bottom measurements", maybe we can squeeze another 3,000 around the stadium!;)

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

If the new expansion is a "mirror" of the NEZ, then the stadium will hold a little over 100,000. Where does the 107,000 figure come in?

I think a good way to get more fans in the stadium is to remove the red seats from the west upper deck. There is no reason for that one side of the stadium to have seats when the other 3 sides will not. I know the 10,000 fans in that upper deck would beg to differ, but it really does make good sense to make it all uniform. That would add about 3,000 seats without having to build anything extra.

Absolutely not!! My season tickets are in the west upper deck and I refuse to set on the bleachers.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

From my hearsay Ive heard that the reason that more seats could be placed in the new south endzone xpansion is because the north endzone ramp
spirals were too close to the endzone structure therefore making it difficult to build more regular seats in those particular areas hence things like the 2 jumbotrons where potential seats could have been placed along with the zone section, skyboxes for more money, and then the other added issue of the upperdeck gaps because of the blocked views of some seats up there with uneven opposing eastern and western upper decks. It was really a group of those types of things that added to the way it was built. So from my understanding even though Bryant Drive would seem to be an obstacle with the limits of the addition;the further spacing of the spiral ramps away from the south end gives the potential for more space than the expansion on the north end when it was conscructed. The Bryant Drive area is more apt to be done more extensively to the max than originally thought because of modern architectual techniques. I would hope that the entire middle portion over the student section in the south end could at least be closed up/in 'u-shape' to create a more uniform middle man seating area. That would of course fit over another possible row of skyboxes though. Then of course you know that we will have to get a brand new super duper swanky jumbo tron that will make Texas version look like a childs toy! Where all of those types of things will fit to go around a capacity of 107,000 is beyond me but I can only hope that it will be that way and reach that number. Oh yes and please someone forward my idea of 2 giant gothic styled Elephants adorning the new south endzone entrance to the athletic department since I know not the address. That way you wouldnt have to worry about feeding them and taking care of them but we could at last have a 3d representation of the Grand Elephant mascot on our warfield. :biggrin2:

The southern ramps are the same distance from the stadium as the northern ramps. Also, it's impossible to get the "U-shape". One reason is that the two sideline decks are not the same height. The main reason is that the end zone seats are closer to the field and the upperdeck there has to be pushed back and the slope has to be increased so that the sight lines are acceptable.

My sister-in-law's cousin's uncle knew a guy that saw a football stadium and she says that it will seat 110,000!:eek2::rolleye2:

Are there less seats in the east upper deck with the stadium seats than the west upper deck with bleachers? Never really thought about that before.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

When they take them out, I'll take your tickets
Don't think that will be happening.

Also, the part about the two ends mirroring is correct -- what's not correct is the capacity. Even taking out the chairbacks in U1-U2-U3, we wouldn't top the 104,000 mark. That's been considered and I've heard the idea was dropped.

Mirroring the Zone would bring capacity to between 100,200 and 100,800. Instead of "107,000," it's more likely that capacity will be "100,700."

As for the chairbacks in general, I'd prefer we chairback both sides and drop capacity and figure out somewhere else to make it up. Many NFL stadia are all chairbacks, and if we'd been thinking about this day 20 years ago (I understand why we couldn't see this coming, but still), we should have figured a way to achieve 100,000+ with premium seating installed.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

I just wish that whatever is decided that there will be several things done
in this final phase

1.have a triple stacked over hanging deck over the student section on the south endzone where a majority are traditional bleacher seats
2.add 3 rows of seats around the bottom level stretching from endzone to endzone along the sidelines
3.reinstall state of the art restroom areas with sinks and toilets that flush themselves and crimson tiles all over
4.a super mumbo jumbotron that would align from one canopy of the eastern deck to the western deck canopy
5.have 2 Elephants for the entrance on the new side
6.redo all concourses to cover exposing pes and ramps from the inside to outside of the view of the stadium by using some sort of material to cover the concrete surface on the ground and above
7.redo every concession stand
8.have 4 new eskelators on each four corners like pro stadiums to ease the walking room to go along with the spiral ramps
9.have a black gate adorning the sidelines and get rid of the ugly chainlink fence
10.bring back the old dinosaur style Elephant roar instead of the shrill scream
11.add a couple of rows of seats over the old 4corner endzone tunnels to expand capacity;would leave just enough room to still have them in use

Then of course the next ideas of mine would be just for bells and whistles

12.have an official permanent stadium store, entertainment and food court like the major league baseball stadiums have
13.have 2 mini jumbo trons in the sections of the south end
14.paint a tidal wave that extends alongeach sideline fence when the new seats and rows are built
15.place widescreen tvs inside the tunnels when you leave
inside the stadium for breaks

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

I wish someone could get a copy of Moores sketch. I like Penn States new monster upper deck where it seats a ton of new regular seats and that would defintely get the capacity up there. Since Moore is concerned with more student tickets being create I cant see a new zone helping that problem.

Not to mention the way the recent discussions have been going according to reports I cant see why Moore would scratch previous expansion plans only to just add 1000 more seats when there are approx.10,000 more people on the ticket waitlist and the student body is now reaching toward over 28,000. Im hoping for at least 105,000 seats at the least
