Spring Practice Thread/News/Predictions

I think the problem with moving spring to fall is you get a guy who is finally going to be a starter. He "thinks" he's ready, but during spring learns why he wasn't as ready as he thought or that certain aspects of his game needs to improve. he's still got all spring and summer to make those corrections. Once fall arrives if you're not ready it's too late.

I really like the idea of a "2 week mini-camp" the last couple of weeks in July.

I mean, it'll be hot and all but no hotter than the first week in August, but if we are going to pay them then let 'em practice more like the pros they want to be.

But, I still think there is a need for spring practice and games too. It's just too much a part of the fabric of college football.

After a burst of media interviews in the beginning of spring the news feed pretty much dried up. There are guys on youtube throwing out glowing predictions but they would do that as the titanic slipped under the water if it meant more clicks. I guess the first scrimmage has to be this weekend yes?

Yep...not real info right now.

I suspect the first scrimmage will be Sat.

Since its a mini-camp and school its not as heavy during July, they could it in the evening and indoors to mitigate exposure to the heat.

And when he can get in a game and adjust to what defenses are throwing at him and make the right reads (both pre and post snap) then we can talk. The live scrimmages (in full pads) should tell a lot because Wommack will definitely force him to dribble lefthanded.

According to Ryan Fowler, Jalen had a big day dropping dimes at practice yesterday. A 50+ yard strike during the 1 vs 1 period, plus a 20+ yard check down pass. Fowler said it sounds like Jalen is gaining a lot of confidence in DeBoer's offense. I think all the quartbacks will do well in DeBoer's offense.

The checkdown pass is perhaps a development, but when I hear he has completed another 50 yard bomb it kinda makes me think nothing has changed. We know he can do that.

But I agree that the real test is being able to pre-snap read a blitz and know who the hot route is (or audible it) to the vacated area of the field the blizter left!

If Jalen learns how to do that we are in business!

Ok, glad they are working. Let me know when Milroe adjusts to defenses....can read a coverage....can see a blitz coming and check down to the hot receiver.

The kid has a cannon, he can throw bombs accurately all day long with no pressure.....we all know this.

How fast is he getting the ball out?

Thanks for posting the images.

I will say any positive from the QBs even just from pass skelly or 7 on 7 is good because last year the QBs were slow and looked bad in those situations much less scrimmage type. Especially Milroe was slow in those drills but the others were too. So if they are hitting in those drills that’s improvement.

Remember how good Mac Jones was at simply sliding away from pressure in the pocket and then delivering the ball? If Milroe can just do that, holy crap watch out.

I just hope Womack will test ALL of them on that. Just throw everything including the kitchen sink at them. The one who handles it the best...starts. If that`s Jalen, fine. If not, the team needs to get over it, put on their big boy pants and earn their pay.

I would think we would all be happy to hear Jalen looks like he is taking baby steps to get better. If I hear he throws 3 interceptions in the first scrimmage then I will be critical. I am going to stay positive about his development and hope it continues.

I’m not a Milroe fan, but it’s not fair that he can’t “win” with these practice tidbits. The same was said last year.

You’re right about the scrimmage being the litmus test

At this point I don’t care if they duct tape all four of them together, I want the player catching snaps to distribute the ball in a quick, efficient manner. If that happens to be Scott Bakula, bring him on in.

I assume it was a closed practice because I cannot find any information whatsoever on it.

Nice post. I just want the guy that can run the offense and make positive plays every down. 50 yard bombs don't impress me as much as a throw away to avoid a sack at this point.

Agreed - it was the over-focus on 50+ yard bombs that hurt us. The success rate that that is very low. I want to hear about executing 5-8 yard hot slants with the ball hitting a WR running full speed in stride no more than 8 yards downfield. Getting the ball out fast and on time has been the issue, not throwing the ball a long way.
