Protectionism is unfortunately an argument in both leftwing and rightwing populism. The Democrats are no longer the party of Clinton on global trade. Neither is the GOP the party of Reagan on the subject. Protectionism has shown to be bad policy for centuries - depriving people of wealth and freedom. But, as has been said many times, bad politics always hold sway over good economics.
