I thought the same thing - glad it wasn't just me. I also didn't like that often we were pulling Qua back off the LOS and he was kinda roaming around behind the DL and it seemed WKU was able to run where he wasn't as it was opening up gaps. We seemed to do a little better when the guy playing that role settled into more of a true even 4 man front with more solid gap alignment - still 1 gap, but had one more gaps covered from the LOS.Not to be a Debbie downer but one thing I did notice in the first game wrt to our DL going to a one-gap, "get penetration" scheme, is there were a lot of running lanes for the QB to escape through. I think that will be something we will be susceptible to is more open lanes for the QB to escape through so our run fits by the LB's will be even more important than ever.
I don't know enough about the game to understand what a leverage weakness would be. I do know enough to know that everything -- every philosophy, every strategy, every tactic, every defense, every offense, every game plan -- has weaknesses. This had me when he said....the 4-2-5 has no inherent leverage weaknesses. I find that fascinating.
Tangentially related to that point, I've kind of wondered about the new Defensive emphasis on free and aggressive play in combination with the increased emphasis on physicality. Not to be a Debbie downer but one thing I did notice in the first game wrt to our DL going to a one-gap, "get penetration" scheme, is there were a lot of running lanes for the QB to escape through. When he mentioned something about the QB telling you if its run or pass in a second......and knowing this D is set up for them to track the ball and react......it does make me wonder how well play action will work on them. Misdirection.I don't know enough about the game to understand what a leverage weakness would be. If there were one that didn't have a weakness, everybody would run it.
On a side note, Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about declaring one of his creations infallible.

Simplification and playing free and loose certainly has advantages. But it seems to me it also creates vulnerability to playing so free and aggressively that you overrun the play or otherwise aren't where you're supposed to be, and you give up big chunks of yardage. Or you hit too hard at the wrong time and commit penalties, possibly including ejections.
That didn't seem to be a problem against WKU. But I'll be interested to see if we can go through the season walking the tightrope between reaping the benefits of free and aggressive play without committing penalties or giving up chunk plays.
Yeah, I loved the pressure in the backfield but I can definitely see how teams with a mobile QB could gut us if we aren't careful.I thought the same thing - glad it wasn't just me. And to support the 3-4 conversation- Saban himself admitted we were only in a 3-4 about 30% of the time.
The guest with Teague even mentioned it - we are not really converting from a 3-4 to a 4-2. At least as far back as 2011 we only ran 3-4 a few times a game. We were nickel over 75% of the time and actually in DIME more than 3-4 (dime was 10-12% of the time). We've not been a 3-4 team in AGES.Bama ran the 4-2-5 under Saban quite a bit especially in the last few years.
