UT claims National Championships in 1938, 1940, 1950, 1951, 1967 and 1998 though the college football data warehouse doesn't give them 1940 or 1967.

1940 went to Minnesota who went undefeated 8-0 and UT had a 10-1 record. UT had a perfect regular season but lost to Boston College in the Sugar Bowl. Minnesota did not go to a bowl.

1967 was given to Southern Cal. whos 10-1 record vs the UT 9-2 record gave then the trophy. UT lost their opener to UCLA and the Orange Bowl to Oklahoma. Southern Cal lost a 0-3 contest to Oregon St. in Oregon and won the Rose Bowl against Indiana.

What year did the AP and UPI polls come into existence?

We claim 12 national titles, '25, '26, '30, '34, '41, '61, '64, '65, '73, '78, '79 and '92, but so many of the AU people I know argue the number of titles we claim (jealousy I'm sure).

I know the '73 title was in the UPI, the '78 title is the AP title and both the '79 and '92 national championships were unanimous.

I realize the national championships in the early years are before the AP poll came into existence.

Can someone explain the national championships we have?

Wow...claiming NC's really is confusing
UT has been voted as NC more times than the 6 listed here...they choose to recognize these 6. I want to say they have been voted NC by one group or another 11 times?

On the other hand...one pubication or another have voted Alabama NC 21 total times...we choose to recognize 12.

I find it confusing because the CFB warehouse have 12 or something years in which we were given a NC vote...one season where we really had no right whatsoever to it...just weird how polls give us that year

Not really weird, IMO. Just a sign of the times. Go back 50 years and you find that the different areas of the country were seperate; geographically, media wise, etc.

Back in the 20's, you couldn't find a soul outside of the South that thought Alabama could travel across the country and win the Rose Bowl.

Final polls

Got a question the timing of the final football polls. The final polls started coming out after the boll games in the late 1970s I beleive. Looks like they did the same thing in the 1940s and maybe before.

What years were the final AP and UPI polls voted on before the bowls games (approximately)?
