Please expand upon the "assisted in his mental illness" claim. To what do you refer?
No, I'm quite dense. What is the mental illness that you are referring to? Clearly the person was disturbed. I'm just unclear as to how they were assisted. I'd like to know to whom else we can assign responsibility for these heinous actions.
I suspect he’s referring to his mother’s catering to his delusion of being female.
It does appear that Westman regretted his transition and his mother wasn't supportive of it (even though she assisted in the name change). Due to language in quotes from Westman's manifesto, I can't show the NY Post link, but here are some excerpts, including the headline:

Despite the antagonistic feelings displayed in the manifesto, Westman penned a separate letter to his family and friends telling them how much he loved them and how his parents shouldn’t blame themselves with how he turned out.
“You did not fail me, you gave me so much. I truly appreciate the love you have given me,†Westman said to his parents. “I feel I was raised to be a good person.
“I’ve kept those traits of empathy, self-sacrifice, and good character. Please do not think you have failed as parents,†he added.
He admitted in a series of disturbing online videos that he regretted being brainwashed into “being trans,†and planned to cut his long hair before unleashing his carnage, in which he planned to kill far more kids.
Westman also wrote that he could neither stop smoking  which he suspected without apparent evidence had given him cancer  nor the attack that claimed two lives and left 18 others wounded at the Annunciation Church on Wednesday.
“I wish I could stop vaping but I can’t! If I could stop vaping, I could stop myself from doing this attack, but I just don’t want to. Stopping vaping will not get rid of my cancer, nor will it make these fantasies go away.â€Â

Nailed it. Not sure if there were any medical professionals involved in this, but if so count them in. Along with anyone else that played along with his delusion because of gender dysphoria.
If this is true it makes it even more clear. He was struggling with detransitioning. He was a mess because he regretted what he did in that area. Makes sense. Mom should have never helped with the name change.
To be clear, being trans does not equal gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is a clinical term (used in the DSM-5) for the distress or discomfort that can arise when someone’s gender identity does not align with their assigned sex or how society treats them.
I think it's more than clear that Westman suffered from gender dysphoria, but it doesn't appear so far that any of the often beneficial mental health counseling and/or psychiatric treatment was provided. Maybe if medical professionals were involved, the outcome would have been different.
Those who bear responsibility for tragedies like this include the entire left wing apparatus (media, parents, psychological care community, education, politicians, et al.). They have promoted the perversion of human sexuality at the expense of young and adolescent children. It is madness and many know it but for their own selfish reasons they persist, they lie and thus, destroy the lives of many. Jesus Christ said, “…It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he would cause one of these little ones to stumble.†Ironically, according to the grace of God, the One who said these things is the only One who can save them from the eternal ruin that awaits them - if they would repent and trust Him.
At the very least demand that this path cannot be pursued until one is a young adult - at least 18 or 21. Then if they sadly and tragically want to destroy themselves, they are an independent individual. Unfortunately, there is not just a society to destroy, or political points to be made, there is also money to be made and they know that the number of victims will be greatly reduced if they wait. So, get those widgets early. (Not everyone has these motives but many do, some are cowards and others are confused or just don’t know, especially among the rank and file who try to rationalize such behavior. The leaders mostly know. To them the victims are just another political point or another customer or…).

- Multiple clear presentations of the gospel from men like @robmccoyus and @DrFrankTurek with clear calls to repentance and faith
- Worship songs full of Scripture sung by tens of thousands live and millions at home
- Personal testimonies of lives transformed by the work of Christ and the witness of believers
- Demonstration and explanation of the value of marriage, child-rearing and family
- Calls to Romans 13 for the government to bear the sword for the protection of good and punishment of the wicked
- Declarations of spiritual warfare on the forces of evil and promises to endure no matter the cost
- Calls to be prophets and call the nation to repent
- More Scripture references and Bible readings than I can count
- And a widow publicly forgiving her husband's killer because Christ forgave his killers on the cross.
All of it done before, and by, the most powerful people in your nation and the world.
You guys should be on your knees thanking God for your country. It is a light to the world.
