I wonder if we would look at successful coaches in the lower divisions. I've read on 'the twitters' that some people have mentioned Lennie Acuff from UAH. Bruce Pearl cut his teeth as a head coach at Div. II Southern Indiana. He obviously didn't make the leap from D2 to the SEC, but it's just a thought.
Please no

I have actually wondered what Lennie Acuff could do at Bama. Living in the Huntsville area I follow him a bit and having coached eat his camps. He is a fantastic basketball mind. He has given us fits in exhibition games.

I think Lennie Acuff would be a tremendous improvement.

Why don't we see if Horry could get one of his former coaches in San Antonio to come to Bama? Surely he could talk Popovich into coming to Bama. If not him, we can settle for PJ Carlesimo.

I haven't posted on this thread up till now because my opinion keeps changing. I'm holding on to the the last piece of thread wanting Coach Grant to succeed and don't know enough about what the future has to offer if he is replaced. The easy answer is it can't be any worse but maybe the new players coming in and maybe some staff changes will bring this team back up. I also think at times that the players may perform better once Releford is gone but the team is much worse right now when he is on the bench so I just don't know. He scores most of the points and occsionally makes some very good passes.

The players still try hard but just seem to be getting tighter as the season goes on instead of playing loose and relaxed.

At times I am very close to agreeing with the threads that state Coach Grant needs to go now or at least at the end of the season.

Some information probably won't come out until after the season but has there been any real information regarding possible assistant coach changes?

Two points:
1. Without Releford, this team would have a hard time against a lot of high school teams. Because of his height, he probably won't get many NBA offers, but he's undoubtedly the mvp of this team.

2. I've never been a proponent of replacing any coach mid-season unless it's absolutely necessary. Doing so causes too much of an upheaval of the team and causes too much uncertainty to both incoming recruits and future coaches. Imo it's always best, if possible, to wait until the end of the season or even after post-season play has concluded.

The three seasons previous to this dismal season, we were 69-37 overall and 33-17 in the SEC. Not bad, also not the significant improvement expected from Gottfried to Grant.

The thing that has surprised me has been how many of the "faithful" sound ready to pull the string on Grant. Not only on this board; also people who are regular attenders and season ticket holders. Most go back to the Newton years and have seen some ups and downs. What I hear most often is that they have all but lost hope for a major upside.

I wouldn't want to be in Battles' place dealing with this situation.

I follow Bama basketball and have for years. I was one of those that thought Mark Gottfried would always come through. Had some decent years, but that last ones were the worst. (Kind of reminded me of the Dubose/Shula years...there's always the next game; always stayed positive) I have watched my last game and will not be attending anymore as long as Grant is the coach....it's too painful. I know the kids deserve better, but they deserve a better coach too. I'm sick of always hearing next year this, next year that...it time now. I don't run the show so I know I have no say; but it's embarrassing that BAMA can't field a better team than what we have. You will never get fans behind the BB team with the results we have now. Sorry folks, just had to vent.

OK. So, Grant's had five seasons. How many do you want to give him? We've played one NCAA game in his five seasons and we're on the verge of suffering our worst basketball season in a quarter of a century.
I don't remember the last SEC road game we've won. We're consistently getting embarrassed by mediocre SEC teams and now we're beginning to lose games we're not used to losing at home. We've got huge holes on the roster - our leading scorer is graduating this season.
Nobody can predict the future, but it doesn't appear bright.
Grant's making 2+ million/year and he's not fielding a competitive squad. We're not getting the return on the money paid him and it hasn't been just this season. It's all about results - and in college basketball, results are shown in NCAA appearances/wins.

Honestly, I have gone back and forth, but I have come to the realization that if the current skid continues we need to make a change. The effort just didn't seem to be there the last week in our 2 losses and from what I am seeing, CAG is periously close to losing the team. If that happens we have no choice.

I do think he was meant to be possibly a mid major coach. The fit has never really felt comfortable. He has never made an effort to promote the program and make a connection with the students or local community. Sometime the best intentions of both parties are not enough to make either one successful.

Sigh... after several years, I'm exactly where I was at the end of CMG's tenure - hoping that the losing gets so bad the administration has to take action. For whatever reason, lack of talent or stubbornness to adapt offensively or AAU relationships, CAG is extracting every ounce of energy that UA has when it comes to basketball. At this point, if the admin decides to keep him, they're going to run the very real risk of alienating the truest of their fans - not just those of us who are partially interested in the off time from football. Bama basketball, in order to succeed, has GOT to find a way to bring the "bandwagon fans" on board permanently... and it's not going to happen in Grant's tenure. IF they act prior to next season, we may lose some players/recruits, but at least they won't lose all support for the program. Unfortunately, in order to have this happen, I think we have to lose badly - something I hate to have to pull for, but something that seems to be the only way to create change.

this is the first year in several years I've not watched their TV games....

The irony for me is that there were so many years where I had to desperately find a radio station loaded with pops, hisses and static, just so I could hear 20 seconds ever 2-3 minutes to hear how they were doing -- and NOW -- they are on TV 20 times a year and they just don't play with any heart outside of TR and maybe Levi.....and even that is very sporadic.

To me, we are in far worse shape than any CMG team ever was -- because Mark at least could recruit.....now we struggle with recruiting AND development.

Our big men may be the least developed group I've seen in my 45 years....and that' just NOT Alabama basketball.....

They've lost me until something changes

Not true - we recruit rather well - but development is a serious issue.

CMG was a walking NCAA violation and sexual harrassment suit. Whatever Grant's flaws, he is neither of those things.

^^^ This. CAG seems to be on a one-man crusade to recruit cleanly and without the AAU corruption. I support him on this. I believe CBB does as well. Still not sold on Grant's coaching abilities. It would be easier to take our lumps if i saw very disciplined offensive sets, inbound plays, fundamentals and well timed time-outs. The "D" is exceptional but other areas leave much room for improvement.

Still a fan and hope he can turn it around next year. I know the Dean Smith story.

I liked CAG, wanted him to do well....but after reviewing the recruits he's gotten, who has turned out to be as good as his recruiting ranking? Beyond TR -- who? It's been disappointment after disappointment.....
