The running game... or lack thereof

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Dear just must not be there yet as far as blocking yet so likely redshirting. Hill should be starter IMO. Miller not cutting it. At least with Hill's size he would get a few more yards.

Lack of running game is not a scheming issue—it’s a personnel issue. It’s not going to suddenly start clicking. We are going to win or lose on the passing game. I’m convinced some of the run plays are called more to run clock than actually pick up yards—that would be a bonus. This team will go as far as Ty can take them as teams increasingly scheme against our passing attack and worry little about the run.

Ty is playing well enough against teams that don’t have the horses to shut him down. That may come to its end in the regular season and likely will in the playoffs if we make it. For now, I’ll enjoy it all for what it is.

I wasn't paying attention and have not viewed replay. Was the Tennessee defense loading the box a lot to stop our run game? Is that why we can't get that push?
Vol strength on defense is their DL and esp. up the middle. all 4 starters are seniors. and weight over 300 lbs. Grubb was too stubborn to use misdirection or toss sweeps until the 4th quarter to have any success. Hill coming in was perfect timing due to his size, energy and bruising style that we finally saw positive movement.

And it helped that by the time Hill came in, the Tennessee defense was starting to tire some. But those sweeps worked well. And Hill is definitely an athletic bruiser.

No. Our IOL just isn't getting it done. With all the different combos of guys we are running its impossible to diagnose where the issue is. Sometimes we get a crease here or there just inside the OT, but the middle is pretty much clogged or a standstill.

I started thinking of Earl Campbell while watching Hill. Hill isn’t at that level yet but his thighs are large and he is a punishing type of runner.
Though, as you say, he has characteristics like him, he’s definitely not Earl Campbell. He is a very gifted athlete for his size though. He has great hands. IMO, he’s the second best runner behind Dear. Hopefully, he will be the primary runner vs USC. Idk how good his pass pro is, he certainly has all of the skills to be great at it, and he seems willing.

290 and technique can only take you so far.

Not sure what the other two are having issues with.

Tip your cap to their defensive line, they have several outstanding players with a lot of size and experience. They are well-coached. I fear we simply do not have the raw speed at rb to get to the edges, though as UT wore down we had success. And Miller gets a pass for the game given the concussion.

Why we stubbornly sent runners between the tackles I cannot explain. The first series of the second half I scared the dogs.

At volume who knows, but I saw Hill throw some great pass and run blocks when he finally came in.
