The way too early discussion on whether Ty Simpson should return next season or enter the draft

If he comes back we lose other QBs currently on the roster...he and Mac are rarities..no one waits more than a season now....

This may be just silly, but do you think they may be giving reasons for making a QB change if something doesn't go well? I mean, it does sound like a conspiracy theory, but like @Bamabuzzard said earlier, we are playing East Popcorn St. University Saturday so we could discuss it.

I think it’s maybe just an easy target to pin all the troubles on the QB position.

If they acknowledge the Poor OL play and RB play and WR play then you are talking about groups of players and throwing the spotlight on pretty ineffective coaching.

I don’t see them making a change at QB barring a really bad injury situation.

Fwiw I think Mack and or Russell would fair just as bad or even worse being under the same duress with so little experience.

I hope they both play a lot this week though just in case.

If he’s a day 1/2 guy, take off. I don’t wanna lose KR either. On a side note the #1 QB for 2027 is heavily leaning Bama so even if Ty leaves I don’t know how much patience these young guys have especially in this new NIL era, he may decide to go. I think we can all bet on Mack exiting either way unless he supplants KR in the spring

IMO his best move is to go pro and get drafted later in the 1st round where he is not doomed by getting drafted by a losing franchise. There is a reason that so many of the top picks end up being busts. They end up with bad organizations. Get picked late first round and you are going somewhere good that can develop you.
The problem with that is this upcoming QB class isn't very strong and you've got some bad teams needing a QB who are drafting in the top 10. So Ty is just as likely to be taken higher in this upcoming year's draft than he would if he came out the following year.

If Ty stays, Russell's future is very likely elsewhere.

This might not be a popular opinion, but I think it's foolish to worry about what the backup QB might or might not do. I recognize that Russell is very talented, but my guess is that, if forced to choose between the two for next year, I would prefer to have Simpson back. Regardless of whether Simpson stays or goes, the NIL/portal era provides no guarantees that a player will stay, so why worry about it. Especially when considering that a team like Alabama can go to the portal to get another talented QB.

There's just as much of a guarantee that the kid we've got coming in the 2026 (Jett Thomalla) will be a star as there is Russell will be a star. In other words, there aren't any guarantees the backup star recruit quarterback is going to be a superstar once he gets his chance. No amount of NIL money can assure that. If Ty wanted to come back, I'd take him back in a heartbeat. A bird in the hand is better than a bird in the bush.

It’s often said that among fans the “most popular guy on the team is backup quarterback because in their opinion he’s better than the guy already taking the snaps”. And we as Bama fans aren’t immune to that thought process. Yours truly included.

I’m reminded of what Gene Stalling use to say. “If you listen to the fans too much, you’ll be sitting with them before you know it”.

While I have no first hand knowledge, it appears at least on the surface that CKD has a pretty tight relationship with Keelon. Would that be enough to keep him here should Ty return? Only Keelon and CKD can answer that.

Id love for Ty to come back and have experience headed into the year. Just hope we fix the OL and the running game....and special teams. Got a lot to work on.

Hard call for me. I don't think he's ready, but leaving early keeps the floodgates of portal transfers OUT of the program contained. If he comes back, we'll lose at least one QB1, be left in a lurch in 2027.

perhaps I'm missing the point - win NOW - and don't need to think too much about the farther out future.

we don't need to be concerned what rounds Ty will get drafted. his NFL future will be his and family to decide. I am Bama first and foremost, I selfishly only care about our future football program.
IMO. Ty is better off going to the pros. they have enough on him to decide and I think for Ty sake, he should start making real money. he has a chance to improve his skills with a possible 3-6 games remaining depending on our Playoff chances.

I feel he could benefit from another year at Bama. But, I also think he could have a good career in the NFL if he is drafted by a team that can afford to let him sit a year as backup and develop his skills.

"Back in the day" rookie QBs never started. In fact, most waited years to get their chance to take the reins. Kenny Stabler held for Blanda who kicked PATs and FGs - when he wasn't holding a clipboard. I think he waited 4-5 years before getting the starting job for Oakland.

There were fewer teams back then. I"m sure that had something to do with it. But there's nothing wrong with waiting and learning and prepping for a few years.

That's debatable. Statistically, history shows that the fewer college games college QB's have under their belts, the lower rate of success they have in the NFL.

I also think it would benefit Alabama if he came back and that way Russell could mature one more year. The kid has high end athletic talent but phsysical talent isn't the biggest hurdle to becoming a successful SEC quarterback. It's the mental side of the game and I'm not sure why we have some who just automatically think the kid is going to step in next season and light it up. The odds say he won't, even with his physical talent. The game moves exponentially faster than high school football and the defenses are ten times more complicated. I'm really not for throwing him out there and it costing us three to four games in losses before he starts turning a corner. Not when he can sit one more year, Ty can come back and we have a chance at not having a regression for a season because we started a RS freshman with hardly any game experience and only two years of college. I'm greedy, I want winning seasons every year.

Right now, I think Ty is projected to be the 2nd QB taken in the draft... he is great at pre and post snap/IQ, etc. I think he should go to the NFL if he is going to be drafted that high. He can get lots of coaching and experience for a year or two, which is probably just as effective as coming back to Bama another year. He loves Bama... he will not transfer anywhere. It will be either NFL or return to Bama.

I think Keelon would wait another year if Ty decided to return, but he would not wait another year after that. I hope both Austin and Keelon get to play a lot this Saturday. I think Ty should only play 1 quarter or maybe a bit more. Give the other guys some good reps.. .we may need them at some point, especially with the way Ty has gotten blitzed and sacked this season.

I would be shocked if Russell decided to stay if Ty comes back. With NIL and how impatient these kids are these days, a rival would love to entice him away from Bama!! Honestly, whether fans think he's ready or not to start, $$ and playing time will be the deciding factor. It's not complicated how this will play out and I'm sure Deboer is fully aware of the conundrum if this scenario occurs.

He should go. The NFL has seen enough to decide on him.. I personally do no think he will be a long time starter in the NFL. If he was a little more nifty like Daniels or Mahomes he might start in the NFL. Without that his passing ability will not get him there. I did not think Hurts would start in the NFL much less win MVP in the Super Bowl, so you can take my opinion for what it is worth. I do think Hurts hit the prefect coach and system for him, and he is taking full advantage of it. Good for him. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I was surprised by three or four of Simpson's bad throws against Oklahoma. Hope it was just a bad day. There could be an answer to that this year.
