To all,

The Covid-19 shutdown has obviously affected much regarding the 2020 college football season. One of the less obvious has been TideFans.com's annual previews.

In a normal year, I'd begin working on those at the conclusion of spring practice, accelerating over the summer, and I would have something in the hands of the readers by late July or early August, at the start of fall camps. In recent seasons, even this has become harder due to lax transfer rules and the "professionalization" of summer camp activity as colleges continue to mimic NFL programs in an increasing number of ways.

For 2020, keeping up with the Covid insanity has made this all but impossible. Entire conferences aren't playing. Inside the ones that are, players are opting out. Georgia lost its presumptive starting quarterback today to an opt-out.

As such, there is no chance we're going to be able to put forward a traditional list of preview articles. We will, however, preview the Alabama Crimson Tide extensively. Articles will start coming down this week into the weekend (Sept. 5).

This isn't how we'd prefer to do it, but like everyone, we're taking things week by week. The entire season will be imperiled on a week-to-week basis depending on who is in charge of what Covid-related decision at each of the individual schools (or their states). We still intend to do weekly SEC game previews and Alabama game previews as per normal. We appreciate everyone's understanding, and we hope to return to normal soon.

Talking about the uncertainties, Jess, Kiffin said today he knew of two SEC schools which would not be able to field a team, if they had to play today, because of infections...
If accurate, whoa. I`ve always felt it`s far from a certainty that we`ll have a season in the final analysis.

I read that. I'd like to know where he got his intel, or if he was talking just to hear himself talk?

I said a few months ago that I would be surprised if they played any games and shocked if they finished a season. Well, we've had some games already, so that is a plus, and I'll no longer be shocked if they finish the season. However, winning championships has always taken a little luck to go along with the hard work and talent, and this year will certainly require some luck with the covid situation. I hope we get our share.

When the NCAA basketball tournament was cancelled, I thought that football was toast as well, even way back in March. Now that we've actually got an opening weekend (albeit a VERY strange one) in the books, I feel pretty good that we will have a whole season. Unlike March, now we have a MUCH better idea of what to expect in regards to Covid. Just my .02, but unless Covid just goes completely off the rails and we see a good many players end up hospitalized, then I don't see a full stop cancellation (of the remainder of the season). I saw where the NCAA Senior VP of basketball said that there were no plans of cancelling the 2021 tournament. Of course, you have to pay attention to the wording there. There were also "no plans" of cancelling the 2020 tournament either. I do not see that happening. Too much money at stake to take the hit a second year in a row. They will go fan-less before they will just totally pull the plug again. A bit of a digression here, but there seems to be a lot of hand wringing over the month of March. I guess because March is synonymous with when the outbreak hit the U.S. Well, it hit here in February. March was when it began to explode. I suppose some think this upcoming March will be another bad month in terms of the virus, but I really don't think so. March just so happened to be the beginning of all this. I think that by this next March, things will be different. But, at least football is able to be played, something that never would have been possible 6 months ago.
