These next 2 weekends will be telling. If we go out and crush South Carolina and beat Tennessee by 2+ scores then this game will feel like a growing pain under a new staff.

If we continue to struggle (even in wins) on the defensive side of the ball then it will be clear we have a bigger problem and will probably be looking for a DC very soon. This one would make me sad because I do really like the way Wommack comes across publicly.

I don't think it means we'll be looking for a DC after year one. Especially if the staff feels like they don't have the type of players to properly run the style defense CKW wants. I think he gets a second year regardless.

If we struggle like this on defense all year then he needs to go. We are not a rebuilding project who can wait for him to fill the roster with the correct type of players. I do not think we will struggle this badly all year though. So in all likelihood I think you are right that we aren't looking for a new DC after year 1.

Plus, this Alabama team was ranked #1 in the country. The team Saban inherited wasn't close in the level of talent and four and five-star players that this one has.
And that ULM team was not close to this Vandy team. Bama was a 24.5 favorite vs ULM and ~22 favorite vs Vandy. So, the ULM loss was a bigger upset.

Iirc, the ULM game was the one where Saban had suspended DJ Hall, then reneged and put him in when it became obvious that Alabama was in trouble. It was a horrible look that made everyone wonder about the message being sent and the resultant culture.

I thought he was only suspended for the first half. I didn't follow the team online back then so I'm not sure about that.

After several days to reflect on this loss I look at it like I did our Sugar Bowl loss to Utah in 2008.
Sometimes you need a GGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDD old fashioned butt whoopin' from a team you should wipe the field with to adjust your attitude and ramp up your work ethic.
None of these guys on this team had previously experienced that in a while, if ever.
As for the coaches, I give them a little break. They have a learning curve, too. I don't care where you've had success before, with very few exceptions, the SEC is a different animal, and I believe the staff learned a good, hard lesson last Saturday.

Now let's see if said lesson is applied this week.........

This! Oh how we quickly forget. The "good ole days" stopped at 2020 and it was ONLY because of a historic offense. Before that, it was 2017 and before. We haven't put together many "complete games" in four years, with three of those four years being under Nick Saban.

Let's be honest, Nick got out because he KNEW the landscape had shifted beyond his ability to dominate like he wanted. So, he pulled the plug.
Yep. We can say Coach did this and that, but the world of college football has changed so quickly in the past few years that he saw the writing upon the wall.
