Trump's Policies Part 2

Thank you - I've been saying this over and over, but many seem to not get it. We're heading off a financial cliff, and while I've no idea (and little confidence) that trump and company can get us back on track, the reality is we owe it to our kids and grandkids to do something about fixing our out of control government spending.

Yes, we'll need more revenue, but that's only going to work when combined with some serious cuts with spending.

Austerity always hurts, but it's a whole lot better when you still have some control rather than when it's foisted upon you...
I've seen plenty about serious cuts, but must have missed the part where Republicans are voting to bring in more revenue. This effort at reducing the deficit seems to be missing an important component.

I'll circle back to what I've been saying for a long time - show me real cuts and I'm happy to pay more. But I'm not willing to pay more based on promises of cuts, as we've heard that lip service over and over and over and over...

That said, I'm not defending the repubs here - talks of sending checks for 'DOGE savings' are ludicrous but show how the republican mind works. And it's one of the reasons I left the party long ago.

Yeah I’m down with DOGE chopping with that “meat axe” but I don’t want any checks going out either. I want that money to just not be spent so the deficit goes in the right direction at least a little bit.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just announced plans to use the Postal Service to conduct the Census instead of wasting billions. USPS workers will also replace 20,000 Social Security workers. "We spend $40 billion every 10 years doing the census. And that means we hire 625,000 people. And they go, and they rent cars and gas, and you pay them food... They go to every household and count the people." "What department do we already have that already employs 625,000 people? It's got cars, already has gas, and goes to every household. [Answer: USPS]." "They can go to your house when you have a baby and give you the form for Social Security. And the 20,000 Social Security officers that we have, we just don't need them. We actually can do real customer service." "Let's use the assets of the government to make us better and save us money."

My mail carrier delivers to several cluster mailboxes in my neighborhood. I can’t imagine how she’d get her route done if she had to go to everyone’s house. This kind of change isn’t nearly as simple as Lutnick seems to make it sound. It does make for a great press release though.

It's a great solution for a huge percentage of Americans - might not work for every household but it would work for many. If it saves money and resources I'm all for it.

I don't know about you but I've never had a census worker come to my house and ask me questions about who lives here. I've always just gotten the form in the mail to fill out and send back. Plus, we're only talking about once every 10 years, not every day.

The quote said,, “they go to every household and count the people.” Is that what he intends to happen? I know Republicans are concerned about accuracy in tue census (as they should be).

Sure, every ten years. So will they have extra responsibilities every tenth year or will temporary staff be hired to handle the increased workload?

If it can save money and resources and still get the job done, I’m all for it. Knee jerk positive reactions to claims of saving money concern me. I know we all roll our eyes at the mention of “studies,” but surely some research and planning needs to be done to determine the feasibility of the proposal.

Yesterday, Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.

Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressional mandated. They've saved millions of lives.

1. All malaria supplies protecting 53 million people, mostly children, including bed nets, diagnostics, preventive drugs, and treatments – terminated.

2. All tuberculosis programs, including the Global TB Drug Facility – terminated.

3. All supplies of US-manufactured emergency food packets for starving children on the brink of death – terminated.

4. USAID’s contract supporting deadly outbreak prevention, detection, and response, including Ebola and Bird Flu, in 50 countries – terminated.

5. All deployable U.S. teams for earthquake assistance – terminated.

6. All U.S.-backed development programming in Afghanistan, including maternal and child health services and girls education – terminated. (Estimated to cause >1,200 maternal deaths by 2028.)

7. Over 1,000 food kitchens in Sudan, a country with almost 25 million people experiencing acute food insecurity – terminated.

8. USAID’s contract for supplying essential medicines for maternal and child health in countries worldwide – terminated.

9. Services from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation - just one organization - reaching 350,000 people on HIV treatment, including nearly 10,000 children and more than 10,000 HIV-positive pregnant women – terminated.

10. Every USAID program in the former Soviet countries in Central Asia, including health programs to combat rampant tuberculosis, along with agricultural programs – terminated.

11. Screening program with the Mexican government to identify illicit drugs like fentanyl being smuggled at the US border.

12. A project in the Democratic Republic of Congo that operates the only source of water for camps with 250,000 displaced people in camps located in the center of current conflict.

I can see cutting the silly USAID programs that are dumb and unnecessary and some of them were really stupid. But the charity of just providing food and aid provides much goodwill for the US.

In a selfish sense, it allows China to waltz in with the Belt and Road initiative and obtain that goodwill and all of those rare earth elements in Africa and other places.

Cutting TB control will cause the downstream issue of increased resistance which will eventually land in the United States and kill. We are not immune.

And many will die when we could likely have revamped the program to make it acceptable to the Republicans. I know we have our budgetary issues... but a small amount can go a long way here. Carrots over bullets. And well under 1% of our total budget.

It’s ok to let those foreigners starve, get sick, and/or die. We have plenty of people in America suffering the same fate who we need to take care of first. We’re not going to do that of course, so why do you think we’d help anyone else? And goodwill is for losers. We make an impression by force these days, like real men do.

Trump is planning to sign an order to make English the official language of the United States. Not sure exactly what that means or how it will affect my daily life but I’m sure I’ll here plenty about it the next few days.

I have a hard enough time getting my mail carrier to deliver my mail if the waste managment company sets my can in the street. Do I think I could depend upon him to do the census as well. That's a door to door thing.

I know what you mean. Mine can't even be bothered to shut the damn door on the mailbox all the way. If we're going to attempt to have the PO do the census, it's imperative that these people are fearing for their jobs beforehand. There needs to be a ten-fold increase in accountability. THEN we might see it done correctly.

My favorite stunt is when he attaches a 5 lb package to the flag on my mailbox with a rubber band.

The move that really grinds my gears is when they stuff my Amazon package in there when it clearly does not fit. Even if they don't damage the merchandise, they still crumple up the regular mail. They put more effort into shoving the package into the box than they would have spent getting up off their asses and leaving it on the porch.

This is so stupid and trivial and on par with renaming bodies of water.

WHO CARES?

The US is one of the biggest melting pot countries in the world and we should strive to speak more than one language anyway.

Maybe I'm only looking at this from a certain perspective but it seems like this admin is hell bent on putting up barriers of all kinds.
