Trump's Policies, Part 7

He is a boogeyman because he has a funny sounding name. But no worse than Ramaswamey...

The right is seriously invested in making Mamdani the left-wing boogeyman.

Yeah, Mamdani is farther to the left than most, but the alternatives are two ridiculously corrupt ex-mayors, one of whom resigned due to multiple reports of sexual harassment after falsifying documents relating to his nursing home policies during COVID, while Curtis Silwa staged crimes to raise the profile of the Guardian Angels. So I wouldn't look to this race as any kind of indicator other than perhaps the people of NYC just want someone who will tell the truth.

Cool, we are going to rewrite history books.
1984 was not a fiction, but a strategy book

“I might be the first to ever think of this but under slavery, black unemployment was 0%. They all had jobs, they all had homes without mortgages. They even joined in unity wearing bracelets! No black men in prison, now there’s a goal we can aim, and my administration has already done it. We are the first to have a 0% unemployment rate across all races, the land of milk and honey, all due to my tariffs!”

I do think you make a valid point that it’s a terrible field, but Mamdani literally spouts communist propaganda and phrases. This is where the party needs to recruit better candidates and find some people that are not quoting the communist manifesto.

it's somewhat entertaining watching the puke funnel work in real time

Well, Mamdani is pretty left wing and makes no effort to cloak it in centrist jargon, but I agree with the rest of your post. Plus, isn't it basically right now FOUR CANDIDATES, thus making it easier for any extremist of any kind to win? Your assessment of the candidates is correct - plus, it's basically three Democrats (at least by party name as Cuomo and Adams were both elected as such) in a Democratic city, so there's a splintered vote and the reputations of two of these guys aren't that great while the third one is, particuarly by the standards of politics, a fresh face.

Besides, let's assume Mamdani is the worst of the worst of the left. How much damage to the COUNTRY is the mayor of a city really going to be able to do? I mean, it's not like there's a former liberal Democrat from New York City in the White House right now wreaking havoc.

Im not even sure I know what socialism means anymore. It doesn't appear the wealthy in Europe are suffering too much from the heavy social tax structure over there.

What is the unemployment and labor participation rate in Europe? What is their entitlement spending as a % of GDP? What is the national debt for Europe?

Maybe George Will is right we might a need contained experiment with socialism every 20 years to have a check to see if capitalism is still serving the interests well of all our citizens...

well, "capitalists" have been contorting themselves in pretzels to promote and support what is beginning to look something like a national command and control economy in service of a bunch of extremely powerful christian nationalist idiots

The average conservative who snorts "socialism" to EVERY proposal from someone to his/her/its left couldn't define socialism with a password and two search engines. Of course, labeling is the easy tactic, and this same tactic happens (at times) with racism and (especially) fascism. Ronald Reagan was being called a fascist before he even became Governor of California - and right up until the day he left office. Folks, the guy had a lot of flaws but FASCIST? Come on. Same with calling FDR a "socialist."

I have no idea. One thing I've learned is economics is different strokes for different folks. What people don't grasp in some cases is there's good and bad all around. The question turns on what gets you the most bang for your buck. A friend of mine lives in the UK and doesn't (by American standards) make a ton of money and he winds up due to taxation paying about 83% of his income in some way as taxation but in his view he gets more back than he would in the US (and he's lived in both). He notes that what works for him will not work for everyone.

But like everything in the USA, we are motivated more by fear than by opportunity, too.

Maybe George Will is right we might a need contained experiment with socialism every 20 years to have a check to see if capitalism is still serving the interests well of all our citizens...

Trump isn't running capitalism.

I'm old enough to recall when conservatives didn't want government picking winners and losers and screamed hysterical over Obama's administration doing it. Now all of a sudden, they're fine with this so long as they benefit themselves. (Reagan's Secretary of Treasury Don Regan headed up Merrill Lynch before he went to DC, and he had A LOT to say about the shady dealings on Wall Street during that "more innocent time" in America, going so far as to say Wall Street was full of "cartelists, not capitalists").

In democracy/republic (pick a term) politics, I can never make anyone like me more, but I can always make them fear YOU a whole lot more.

White House joins TikTok after delaying enforcement of sale-or-ban law

The White House launched a TikTok account on Tuesday amid uncertainty about the app’s future, as another deadline approaches for its parent company, Bytedance, to sell to a US buyer or be banned in the United States.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly extended the deadline of a sale-or-ban law passed under former President Joe Biden’s administration, with the new deadline less than a month away on September 17.

The latest delay in June kept the app accessible for its 170 million American users, despite the legislation that passed last year with bipartisan support over concerns that TikTok’s Chinese ownership poses a US national security risk. And it came as both the United States and China sought leverage in tense trade talks.

TikTok’s ultimate fate in the US remains unclear, but the official White House account is a signal the app could be here to stay.

From Google AI...

Based on the available information from Eurostat:
In 2023, general government expenditure in the EU on social protection amounted to 19.2% of GDP.

This represents the most significant area of government spending, accounting for 39.3% of total government expenditure.
Within social protection, spending on "old age" benefits (primarily pensions) constitutes the largest component at 10.4% of GDP.

Other notable components of social protection spending include:
- Sickness and disability: 2.7% of GDP
- Family and children: 1.9% of GDP
- Survivors: 1.4% of GDP
- Unemployment: 1.2% of GDP

It's important to note that these figures represent general government expenditure, which includes spending by national, regional, and local governments, not just the EU budget itself.

A separate search...

Overall social spending: In 2023, the EU's total expenditure on social protection benefits was 26.8% of GDP, according to the European Commission. The US spent almost 11% of its GDP on social programs in the same year, says Courthouse News Service.

Now here is something really telling...

AI Overview

The European Union's labor force participation rate, which represents the proportion of the working-age population that is either employed or actively seeking employment, is around 75.4%. This figure indicates that roughly three-quarters of the EU population aged 15-64 are part of the labor force.
