UAB 30 - Southern Miss 17

Joe Webb making the Webb name proud. Joking aside...no relation, an obvious pigmantation delta. :D

So much for Southern Miss becoming a BCS buster. They looked good to start the season, and were close to beating Kansas on the road. UAB looks improved, but they are still not that good. Very bad performance by Fedora's offense. This is a team the Eagles beat 70-14 last season.

UAB's offense is a much weaker version of VT's with an athletic mobile QB that doesn't see the field very well and cannot throw a particularly accurate ball. Their playcalling is extremely predictable: run into the pile on first down and either get 0 or 5 yards.

UAB's defense plays very soft and gives WR's a very big cushion. If the pass rush isn't good, a first down is likely.

Southern Miss was playing without their #1 RB and #1 WR, and it showed. They made a lot of yards, but screwed themselves out of several first downs with penalties.

Southern Miss made a costly turnover at the end of the game, fumbling away a punt, and their chance to win. A desperation interception at the end of the game made this game look much less close than it really was. It should have been a 6 point game.

Really sloppy game by USM.

Congrats Blazers, but man did Legion Field look empty! Sad, about time the Iron Bowl moved back in like every third year or something.

Wouldn't be feasible with the kind of shape it's in now. LOt of good memories there though. I remember my freshman year when the car broke down outside of Legion Field heading to the Tulane game. That was an interesting time.

There's no way in H*** that would happen. I will admit, I loved having the Iron Bowl in Birmingham, and I miss the history that surrounded Legion Field, but that place is so run down its sad. The Iron Bowl means to much to gamedays in Tuscaloosa and Auburn to have it moved back to pre-2000 or pre-1989.

DeAndre did not play. Neither did #1 RB Damion Fletcher. (injuries v. KU) But seriously...UAB??? The locals are in total meltdown. (see my post yesterday about USM's lack of emphasis on defense...showed v. UAB) Also--and this *is* surprising--USM was *very* undisciplined. Critical penalties @ key times.

BTW, DeAndre had looked pretty good after his injury, tho still not quite to pre-injury form imo. When he's 100% & motivated, he's pretty much un-coverable. (I still contend that one can tell when he lines up whether he's part of the play or not...and I'm old & sitting in the stands or on my couch...this is not good for him)

exiled

p.s. - any given Saturday...(or Thursday, in USM's case)...Roll Tide!

I believe the Mayor of Birmingham has talked about tearing Legion Field down.

Well, the Mayor of Birmingham will probably be spending the next few years in prison due to an assortment of felony counts. Of course he also recently proposed bringing the Olympics to B'ham.

Also, it's a good idea never to use "I believe the Mayor of Birmingham" in a sentence.

I don't know what the announced attendance was, but that was not even a decent HS crowd. They need to pull the plug on UAB football.

I believe that they will. You never hear anything about it in the fawning Birmingham press, but UAB is an institution in free fall. Their vaunted research operation is losing their senior well funded investigators and their grant support is in decline. They are firing non-tenured faculty left and right and they are talking about furloughing the faculty that remain. UAB is a rapidly sinking ship and they are going to throw anything that is not essential for survival overboard.
